That's Happy Mother's Day to you female railroaders. Anyway, I visited an Ollies on Saturday, and spotted some Chuggington stuff, and Hey, it's HO and POWERED! Priced retail around 79 bucks, Ollie's price 29.99. I snagged a Wilson red F7 and a blue hopper. I took them to Train shop today, and opened up the Engine - it has a plug-n-play Decoder harness port, so it will be easy to DCC this one. It had the typical tiny truck gears that Bachmann was so famous for ( noisy! ) , and I wasn't expecting much, but it surprised me....it runs smoothly and silently, and a fair amount of speed but not Hyper-drive. This should be more fun to run than a Thomas engine I think. At any rate, didn't really need it, but thought it'd be cool to have this to run at my club's Open House monthly train shows. And some bigger events, too.

O.O I want one! Actually I wants Brewster really

Bachmann SD 40-2
no idea why Bachmann only put the shield on one side
this one needs gears since they are stripped does have a blinky light on it
As does this Spectrum Amtrak Phase 3 F40PH
will have a friend put in capacitors to keep the strobes on when it stops
sorry about pix but it was getting dark outside
EDIT: Just for fun a SW1 by Midgetoys

I don't have any earthly clue why, but I do like that MidgeToy switcher. Guess it has that certain cheezy look. Well, the PC was strapped for running motive power at the end, here is a rare shot of the little known Penn Central Box Cab.

You may have been joking Chops, but the real Penn Central certainly wasn't!

sim-al2 Also since they cut track maintaince the trains had huge trouble making over the railroad by the end 純那 yeah They did a Rock Island volountarily

Well, you learn something every day! I really was ignorant about those ex-Pennsy box cabs dressed up in the Worms in Love logo. That is quite a surprise, particularly considering just how antique those GG1 predecessors were. Maybe I'll drop a pantograph on this little honey and remove the radiators...fact, think I will do just that. https://youtu.be/QA3w_cwPNXI BTW, that TAD website is pretty nifty for a PC and Conrail guy, like me. Some shots I've never seen before. Might be able to bash this C-liner I got into a presentable E40 without too much trouble.

LOTW: Bachmann N&W #610 4-8-4 J class that I recently spent wayyyy too much time restoring. It was completely broken when I first bought it. The LED headlight was one of the features that I added. Photoshopped in the smoke. My first attempt at weathering is seen on the Gondola on the left.
If I can't fix it, I can fix it so it can't be fixed.

Trainman, I would have to say your efforts were well rewarded. That is some pretty remarkable work.
Pokemon's link put me in touch with some PC electrics I didn't know existed. That E 40 is a bit more involved than I realized, once I started looking it up. It is double ended- European style. Still, with a C Liner chassis and a couple of F unit cabs, something might be able to be assembled. Maybe I'll take a go at it.

That is quite a piece Frank. I would imagine that German engineering made that thing run pretty smooth.

Thanks Chops124! I was really bored on an airplane ride, and found a file for smoke, and a train picture on my laptop, so I was like why not? It took around 10 minutes to do...

Some great pictures. I have ALWAYS loved the Tyco F9s, particularly the MU2 ones from the late fifties-early sixties. That kind of growling/whirring sound they make is about as magical as you can get in model railroading.
And, the neatest thing is that my new N scale Kato F7s ( I know the Tycos are really F7s) make the same scaled down sound. I was gob-smacked when I first ran them.

* The photo of the loco I have is listed in a 1956 AHC catalog that has attached with it pages of early brass. This model isn't listed in the Brown books I have. The tender is unique on this model. All PFM 4-6-6-4's have larger tenders.
* Today I found a vedio on you tube of with the manufactur's name as " Teysudo Mokei Sha ". * Also I have A sale flyer by M. B. Auston showing that they also marketed this UP Challenger . * Being the wording on the Tchhang info is foreign, that maybe the European name for the manufacture. Where as here International Model Products and it seems M. B. Auston both sold this model. frank
AHC 1957 catalog page 9 lower left is Challenger.
Here is the M.B.Auston info on the Challenger. This has no date on it.
you tube link to information. Tetsudo model. info dates model to 1954

I think the E40 is an ex-NH EP5. Don't think anyone's imported those in plastic. The nose almost looks more "alcoesque". Maybe a pair of FA2's would be a better starting point?
Edit - I stand Corrected regarding the Plastic thing... http://rapidotrains.com/nh-ep-5-jet/

To keep with Barry's theme of early Japanese brass production, I have a two-fer offering this week. Pre 1953 all Japanese brass was hand made. Most production numbers back then ranged from 1 of 1 to 1 of 4 on average. At most you might have a 1 of 10 units produced. Mass production of Japanese brass began sometime in 1953. This one is a early 1950's handmade 4-8-8-2 Cab Forward Locomotive:
This one is one of my collection all-time favorites... Early Tenshodo Northern Pacific MINNETONKA HO Scale 0-4-0 Brass Steam Locomotive - The only one like it I have ever seen and to give some idea on the production rarity...the following is a quote one of the editor's of the original Brown Book on Brass:
quote: "I had seen the similar model once when I had edited "The Tenshodo Book". The model is preserved in the guest room of Tenshodo, today. I have never seen other piece in Japan." |
It may be a 1 of 2 produced. Now there is one in the Tenshodo catalog, but it is clearly a production model and not a hand made piece. Even at that however, I have never seen a production model come up for auction. Fell pretty lucky to have it.

Thanks for the tip(s) Dan, doesn't seem that Rapido E5 is in production yet. Add that to my wish list.

Another striking beauty. What say: two E units back to back, with the covered wagon roof leveled off with a rectifier box on top and a couple of pantographs?? Thank you again for putting me onto these units, for all my interest in the PC these particular beauties, including the P5, had completely escaped my notice. Rather like discovering a new planet, really.
