I would like to convert my old collection of AHM cars to body mount couplers using Kadee # 5 couplers. I have read that they can be difficult and require custom made shims for each car. With pinched nerves in both hands I would appreciate any help or suggestions to accomplish this in a reasonable manner.
Thanks for any ideas. This forum has been very useful in identifying my collection.

Welcome, Frank.
I've found that a .030" thick piece of styrene covers most cars AHM makes. This can come from a variety of sources including old credit cards. I just glue it to the underbody, lightly glue the #5 box and all to the shim then check the height gauge to make sure it's right. You may have to swipe it with a file or add one or two Kadee washers but most times it'll be right on or near enough. Drill for a small screw for strength and you're done. This is a Tyco flat that didn't need any shimming.

This is a Life-Like Scene Master car that needed several.

Thanks a million Shaygetz! This will be a great start for a summer project, I lost most of my AHM files due to a computer crash this past winter. During a transfer to a new drive the AHM files were lost, many of which can be reconstructed. Fortunately the problem was realized early and all other files were intact. Finding the Tyco Collector's Forum was a blessing. My hat goes off to Tony Cook for his efforts on this site - know how much work is involved in sorting thru all the data. I have done similar things in the past.
Shaygetz you have really helped and again I thank you!

| You're more than welcome. Yes, theses folks have a refreshing site for the hobby, I'll never look at Tyco quite the same way again.
