I have some AHM c-liners that I'd like to repower. Looks like I could get some Model Power FA2 models cheap and stretch the frames. The Alco trucks would be similar to the FM types. Would you / have you tried this? What other way of repowering would you choose?

Thanks, John. I'm basing my thots on what is readily available on Ebay, for cheap. Another cheap option I've considered is using the snap-in truck assemblies from a Tyco Sharknose. This would only require some modification to the AHM c-liner shell. This whole project is based on the poor performance I've experienced with the original AHM motors, plus the fact that my AHM shells have already been custom-painted.

The AHM armature shaft is 2.3mm, you can modify the motor housing and mount a small can motor vertically in the old housing having a 2.3 x 18 mm output shaft and use the stock AHM gear, or do like I did and use a small can with a 2.0 x 18 mm shaft and substitute a worm gear from an old AHM RS2 or ALCO 1000 which is 2.0mm i.d.

You can do some minor shell alterations and then drop it onto the old Athearn GP35 chassis. But you have to use the old chassis from the wide body shell. Then repower as any old Athearn.

C-liner side frames were/are made by Smokey Valley. These are a direct replacement of the plastic Athearn side frames.

Could you let me know (or send a pic) on how you fasten the small can motor to the truck? I am trying to remotor using a 2.0 worm gear? Thanks a lot!

I'd like to know, too. By the way, what brand of motor would
necessarily have a 2.3 x 18 mm output shaft?
