| Wow...what a unique piece. Was it ever even run? That's about as sorry a case of zincmites I've seen in a while.

Cool! I tried to do the same thing to a Bachmann F9 when I was a kid, only I used a 9V and it didn't work too well.
Seems to be pretty well-constructed for something that's largely a toy.
I also LOVE the manufacturer's description of how it works and what to do with it... makes it sound like a live-action video game.
Note that the parts diagram makes mention of a Pennsylvania version (by way of where to put the decals).

I don't have a one track mind. It depends on the turn-out. "I love your catenary!" Is that a power-trip or just another pick-up line?

Hi Tony. The Shells Are Globe F7As. With Horn Hook couplers and Globe shell, that would date them to mid to late 1950s.

Globe was purchased by Athearn in 1951. Athearn continued to sell the Globe line for years and in the mid 1950s he started using the Globe shells on the Athearn line. The early Rubber band drives had the shells exactly the same as the Globe models, later the molds were changed to include the Number boards and Opened the Front Pilot, & removed some of the detail around the rear coupler area. This way it was able to be used on Athearn's then New Gear drive.
.
The UP Shell is an exact model down to the printing. The picture of the Globe F7A instructions shows the exact model. The Sheet shows Silver on the rear top area. The early Globe Shells were only Yellow Plastic with Red Lettering, no Silver. Just as the K & O Engine.
I purchased 4 of these years ago. 2 Santa Fe's & 2 UP. I found them at a Bike store in York, PA. The number on the box that had the UP is the same as the Santa fe. In fact the box cover had Santa fe on it, no mention of UP. I guess the UP came afterwards and to save money they just used the same Box. You just looked though the box window to see which engine...
All 4 had the same problem as yours, metal and rubbler wheels disintegrating. I took the best wheels from all 4 to make 2 complete models. Later I used other parts to repair the other 2.
I found that there are 2 types of wheels on the K & O engine. Some had Metal wheels with Rubber. (to insulate it from the rails). and some had all metal wheels with an insulating Bushings on the axle so that the wheels would not short out the track. No matter which one you have the wheels are always falling apart. I found that you can use the Globe or the Athearn plastic wheels from the dummy F7A trucks. The wheels are exactly the same size. Just Grind down the axle points and they will fit perfectly in the trucks. For the Drive axle I use the Athearn metal wheel and used bushings on the axle to insulate from the track. The metal wheels make it run better on the rails. The UP in picture still had good rubber on the drive wheels. The other wheels are Globe / Athearn

Very Cool to see and confirm the existence of the Union Pacific model! It's a very neat little beast.
