I need some help fellas with this old rock island geep its a power torque motor I took a break for a coupla days from the layout rebuild to service some of thse old tycos to see what ive got.I took this old girl apart cleaned it greased the gears one small drop of oil on the bearing new traction tires putt er' back together and see it lights up but just sits there and it humms. Now i did clean out the comutator with a pencil eraser but it wasnt in bad shape the gears turn okay by hand and the motor doesnt look burnt or badly abused,could it be the brushes thats the only thing i negleted to check or pull out and clean somebody give some ideas please.

Good point on the brushes. They can build up loose carbon, and become insulated through the burnt residue. You need to clean and GENTLY scrape them clean. I use the back side of an X-acto knife, not the sharp edge, to gently scrape the old carbon off of them. If the copper pads on the armature are dark, might take more than a pencil eraser to clean them. Also, try hooking the power wires DIRECTLY up to both brushes directly to see if the motor runs. if it does, then follow the electrical path back to the wheels ( wiring, etc ) to make sure there is adequate continuity. I always test my engines directly at the motor brushes first to eliminate brush and commutator dirt, clean them if necessary, retest, then keep going to the wheels until it it running with power going through the wheels.
