My BOTW offering is more a structure than a building. Just purchased this built wooden Campbell oil derrick...

There's a full-size version of that at Drake's Well, near Titusville, PA.

A pic of my A&P building. At the time the roof and sign were just sitting there for the pic.

Very interesting pieces. I always liked the A&P- it provided
quite some detail without overwhelming the skills of the novice.
Attached is a view of the Tyco piece, "Speedy Andrew's."

** I have seen a few of the A&P stores before but not the Campbell's built up Oil derrick. Both are interesting buildings. Even the old Speedy Andrews repair shop has charisma !

At Mother Seaton last Sunday, I seen on a table a Vollmer 2 track engine house just like one I reciently got. All built up with a little of the fancy roof edging damaged. I think it is sometimes referred to as "Gingerbread". Being as they cost about $150 as a kit new, I thought I didn't need another 40 dollar or more engine-house. I still had to ask how much? The dealer said " TEN BUCKS" ! ! ! It was like a wild west quick draw shootout. I went for wallet and it was stuck in the back pocket. I almost flipped myself over, and tore my pocket off get it out. Needless to say I have two of them now. Yep and the doors open and close by the locomotive going in and out.
frank

Here is a photo I have of it taken when I took my picture of my finds.

At least once a week for a long time I have driven past several Victorian era water towers, one in particular I like because the tank is visible on its upper deck. I figured that the wood tank would be difficult, but after doing some research it did not seem like it would and I whipped one out in about an hour. This structure is going to take longer than my others because I am going all out on details, the walls will be built walls, not slabs of balsa wood, same with the roof. I have never done a hip roof before, full size or miniature. I still have a lot of balsa wood for future projects.

That water tower is looking really good. What are you going to use for the roof tiles?

WOW!! Fantastic work on that tower! I LOVE it! Where is it located? Almost looks like it might be in New England?

The water tower is in Bayside California, Bayside is a tiny rural community between Arcata and Eureka California. I am going to use black poster paper, the same that I used on my garage, chicken coop, pigeon coop and train station.

Great modeling work, I like how you included studs in the walls. What kind of glue are you using to hold it all together?

I use good old Elmer's glue and Aleene's tacky glue from Ace Hardware. The corner posts and beams have pins inserted for strength, I cut pins from a sewing kit down to ¼ inch, pre made holes in the beams on the corners and holes in the tops of the corners of the posts and pressed them down with the edge of my needle nose pliers, did that to the bottom and top corners of all four walls before putting them in place on the deck. I am going to use wood strips for the siding, rather than cut sheets of balsa as I did with my other structures.

Nice tidy work there Martin. I like the way you ran the cables around the tank.

Using the HO scale of 7.25 feet to the inch, my water tower is at 56 feet at the top of the roof and the lower structure is about 24 by 24 feet and has 12 foot walls. Doing my estimate of the original I believe the building is about 16 feet across and does have tall walls, but total height may be 34 feet and its water tank probably holds 2000 gallons. My tank would be a 10 foot wide by 9 foot high water tank and that would hold about 4500 gallons. I have bracing that I will add to the middle and hip style rafters for the corners before I put roofing on it. I am going to keep the whole thing apart so that it can be viewed in its five pieces; base building, middle, top structure, tank and the top roof. I ran out of plastic doors, so I cut some very thin balsa wood, etched grooves in them, put a pin in each groove and glued the two pieces together, like a sandwich. I made a pin hole in the thresh hold and one in the header for the door and put the door in place. It opens very easy.

That water tower really has character. I can see, by the full framing, that you're building as much for the love of building as to have the structure.
