Friends,
This PRR Alco Century just sold on ebay for around $45. Does anyone have any ideas or info on this?
Thanks,

Alco Fan

PRR Century 430:
I thought it interesting and suggestive the seller said it came from "a collector" and was offered from a NJ address, home-base of you-know-who when these early 430s with the Mantua-powered models were being manufactured at Woodbury Heights.
It certainly looked absolutely original and begs the question of whether it is the Big Sky 430 situation all over again. Like the revolving door of color (and name) variations the Mantua Illinois Central models went thru, was the GN 430 victim of the real-life merger creating BN, just as--perhaps--this PRR 430 was victim to the PennCentral merger and subsequent offering of the 430 in PC warpaint?
Veeery interesting...

Mag Ac,
I was glad to read your response. I could kick myself for not bidding a little faster on the PRR Alco. I quess that I still thought of it as possibly a custom paint job. The 4301 on the cab was placed exactly the same as my Mantua SF Alcos and the font was consistent. I agree with you it looks original and your argument about that scheme being squeezed out by the Pennsy-NY Central merger and green paint is right on the mark. I hope there are more to be found like that. I wonder if there are some Tyco employees around who could verify other schemes or those produced in low numbers.
On the bright side I just added an Alco in the blue and yellow SF freight color scheme, no handrails no couplers, burned out light but a nice glossy finish, to my collection.

Bob,

Ah, so YOU got the SF BlueBonnet! I didn't see it till I went looking for your PRR listing, but I wouldn't mind having that one.

FWIW, the font on the PRR unit seems to exactly match that on the GN. Which led me to notice something else, looking at Tony's site: the GT and SF Blue 430's also have the same font, unique to themselves, and were catalogued for only the same short time.

I wonder if this can bear any consistent, concrete relevance for trying to date and catalog newly-discovered items?

That PRR unit is a beaut BTW.
