I am looking for a 1935 paint scheme FVM Hiawatha observation car. My observation car was destroyed in shipping and I haven't been able to find a replacement in almost a year. I tried Emailing FVM but my latest attempt didn't even yield a response from them concerning the expected release of the rerun of them.
Any help would be great. I would consider a Nickel Plate Products observation also providing it's in the 1935 scheme.

** Sounds like you need to rebuild or repair your damaged or broken car. That is all a part of the word model in words model railroader. Fix it ! frank

I wish I could. :-( The roof and beaver tail were punctured and the pieces are missing. Plus, I would never be able to match the finish...
God I love this engine...

This is the car I'm looking for... Mine was broken right where the roof slope starts.

It's packed away. I could certainly fix it and painting it isn't a problem (check out some of my work on the Gilbert HO site, reproduction page), but I would know that it was broken and it won't lay down right with me, especially on that set. I've wanted one for a long time and I want it right, especially for the money I have into it.

I've also tried to contact them. Between them and Streamstyle Graphics, all I hear are crickets. Evan

Then do it. I checked the Gilbert site and your work on restoration and referbishing is much better than good it is excelent. You should fix it just for display, or running, or just to have till a replacement is found.

I agree. If you've got the skills, then do it. I've been putting cars back together that I disassembled or broke when I was a kid. They're not perfect, they're not 100% original or "correct", but they're complete and they're runnable. They're definitely a lot more enjoyable that way than they were while piled up in the "broken" bin.
Besides, the prototype broke/breaks stuff all the time. What do they do when they break a knuckle or cross a drawbar or put a big flat spot on a wheel? They fix it and put it back in service.

I wish it were that easy. I work 55-60 hours a week and have 4 kids and a wife that demand most of my time. That leaves me little to no time to work on trains and on top of that, this is what I consider to be a new item and I'd rather buy another new one and save the broken car for parts, ie trucks, etc. If it were a 50+ year old set, then I might have a different outlook on it but it shouldn't be this hard with a couple year old set.

Joe' I hope that is you. I got that from the Gilbert site. As to what you've just said, I have been there, done that. There is really no way around it. Family then work always come first. I hope some day to see a video of that Hiawatha set running with its new Obs. Take care C U latter. frank

Ha! Yes sir Frank! Getting a layout built will be my top priority once we move and I get a dedicated train room again. Once that happens, I'll definitely be shooting some videos of my passenger consists running and going thru my prewar Trix TTR Manyways station. I appreciate the help in getting me to try to fix my car. Perhaps if I don't find one, then I will get it out and see what magic I can perform.
And yes, that's me over there... My screen name here reflects my old street rodded 71' Suburban I used to have.
Here's my Manyways station if you're not familiar with them. Gilbert took some liberties with this design when they made the S gauge Union Station in the 50's.
Thanks again, Joe
