Heya guys, been a long time. Been busy with projects, school, and life. Long story short, I got a 3D printer, learning CADD, and I'm now drawing up some stuff of my own. I've been printing details and parts in O scale, lotta luggage, trashcans, some water tanks, etc. I spent most of last night drawing, modifying said drawing, and printing a conversion kit. "Conversion kit?" I hear you ask, yes, for a Mantua General. Cary made a very nice one to make a more modern looking engine, but I wanted something different, and there is a HUGE lack of Camelbacks. Yes, that's right Ladies and Gentlemen, I have made a camelback shell that can fit onto a Mantua General's chassis. BEHOLD!
I am in the process of drawing up the cab and another prototype will be printed this week.

That's cool to see your CAD/3D printing project, and an interesting use of the General. Hope to see more pictures as your project continues.

Will be printing the cab tonight and I will be posting more pictures later. Made some adjustments to the boiler and firebox drawings after test fitting the prototype.

Here she be,
Will have to get a taller stack eventually, using what parts I have readily available.

With what I have done in the past, your kitbashing is very interesting to me. I will be watching intensely. Frank

I'll have to do one of 2 things, make a long drive shaft, or shorten the firebox. I hope to rap this project up soon, as I want to give my printer some upgrades and that'll take time afterwards with the recalibration.

Ooh shiny, what resolution are you printing at with your setup? Looks pretty good, some filling/sanding would do wonders on any parts that are a little ridgey. I'll have access to 3D scanning/printing facilities hopefully by March and will be getting to make some custom trucks, reefer car parts and coupler conversion kits for Mantua cast metal cars, can't wait to get back to this kind of thing.

What kind of reefer car parts? I have two on my workbench and both need (two different types) of hatches.

Door hinges for one, but mostly hatches. I need at least 3 or 4 different ones and I'm beyond sick of looking for spares elsewhere given the sheer variety of different cast metal hatches made over the years. There must be dozens...

The ones I need are fairly generic, but on the same dime, I could probably never buy cars "for parts" if they weren't just completely wrecked, as anything with life left I'd want to restore.

Not to get too off topic here, but I feel the same way, I only ever part out a car if it's got a cracked shell or severe structural damage. Everything else gets restored or rebuilt eventually. I have a Megow MDT wood reefer that's nothing more than sides glued onto a block of wood, and the block of wood has a half-inch chunk ripped out of the roof. All the parts have fallen off... you can bet they'll all be replaced as soon as I cut out the hole and fill it with some scrap wood

Phew, after sickness, hard times, weather, and etc. I finally got around to finalizing the print. Now i'm waiting for brass parts galore.

Also got some new plastic for the running boards. Didn't like the butcher job I did on those pieces of plaststruct channel. I'm considering making my own tender, or redoing what I have now, doesn't look too good now like it did last year. Drawbar was easy, first print was a flop, made some adjustments to the drawing, and perfect fit on the 2nd print. There are now 2 cab wall versions, arch window and 3 frame window. The roof I had redone, the arch was too steep and it looked goofy. Firebox has now been shortened by a 1/10 of an inch. Added a canopy for the fireman. Once the brass comes in, i'll start sanding and getting this project done.

Good to see the update Mike. And your description of the challenges. It seems lately, my projects get spread over many weeks, and months, and I don't think that's all bad. What the heck, it's a hobby. And I think sometimes the delays end up arriving at some unique solutions. Keep the posts coming.

Agree with you there Barry. Kinda funny, I figure I need 2 more Mantua Generals. One for the Cary boiler, and the other two for a frankenstein monster kind of kitbash. (evil laughter & etc.) A lot of things have been happening here in my part of the world, always thinking of new ways to use my printer. Since I have a heated printbed, I can use different materials now besides PLA. One of my ideas that's still in development, is making molds. I already figured out how to draw them up on CADD, just got to research materials. Materials for printing, melting point of said materials, what plastic or resin to use in the mold, mold release, could I use white metal? and etc. Lot to think about

Making molds sounds cool. Seems like learning to draw the stuff in CAD would be the hard part, but I'm basically ignorant of how CAD works or the requirements for 3D printing. I have definitely thought that 3D printing should be capable of making HO scale people, but I guess there's the whole software business of being able to transfer a simple image to 2 more dimensions. It would be fine to make HO people in the poses you want, but can never find . . . but maybe 1 in a pack of 5; or locomotive parts, and on and on. Depends on how much you have to spend on a printer . . . which leads to creativity. You can make it work.

Honestly, better off making your own HO scale people using modeling clay. How I would make HO scale people using CADD would be to first make a 1/24 scale prototype, 3D scan it in, and then be able to scale down to O or HO as needed. Problem with that idea is a high resolution printer is needed.

Problem with making your own out of modelling clay is that's a one-at-a-time process.

The initial prototype can be made from modeling clay. The rest can be molded.
