Is there a quick and easy visual trick to quickly determine whether a locomotive is an F3 or an F7?

Well, model F3s are generally molded with the "chicken wire" vent grilles of the earlier and middle phase F3s. Late-phase F3s are externally identical to early F7s. And later F7s had features F3s never did.

Tyco's so-called F9s are actually later-period F7s. They don't have the additional louver ahead of the porthole, nor any other distinctly F9 features.

Thank you. Do you know of a place where all these differences between the various F-units are summarized?
