I had purchased an older Tyco set circa 1971 or so, from a yard sale and it came with a New York Central Shifterr 0-4-0 Locomotive serial number #3992. In the beginning it worked fine, but of course it was put up until i set my layout back up after a move and now it wont even light up or run at all. I have removed the body from it and found two wires not connected to anything, one of them runs across the motor assembly and the other runs from the headlight. Does anyone have any diagrams or information on these locomotives? I really want to get it back up and running.

Very good description but say it with a photo. Oh and the number on the bottom is Mantua's part number for the bottom plate. Go to HOseeker and look up literature list and find mantua. Then enjoy the catalogs, and car and locomotive diagrams. The mantua 0-4-0 and 0-6-0 are almost the same in the way they are put together. frank

There are only two wires in a Shifter. One runs from the left motor brush to the tender. Typically, it is not connected directly to the brush, but is soldered to the stud on which the spring for the brush is mounted. If you need to resolder this, be careful not to solder the spring to the stud or overheat the spring so it's no longer springy.
The other wire goes to the headlight. It is soldered to the bottom of the light bulb socket. The other end is stripped for about 3/16" and is pinched under the spring for the left motor brush at the end opposite the brush. That end is hook shaped and grabs the insulated holder for the brushes.
The metal wheels on the tender should all sit on the left rail, while the plastic ones sit on the right. The wire from the tender to the motor provides electrical contact from that rail to the motor and the light. The connection to the right rail is through the engine body and frame.
