So we've already established the NP is "legendary," the NYC is "uncommon," but what about the rest?
The main 2 models I have questions about are the Santa Fe and Canadiana shark. Now there is a Santa Fe shark up on eBay right now. The owner claims that "Very rare item seldom seen, the Tyco Santa Fe shark is extremely rare, just as rare as the NP shark and the WP caboose. Don't miss this one, there have been only 2 of these on ebay in the last 15 years and this one was one of those back in 2004." Is this true? While I haven't seen an ATSF shark is it really that rare? Does it deserve the same legendary status as the NP does? The WP Caboose claim doesn't seem to hold ground as that item appears to be the rarest of the rare.
Also how common is the Canadiana shark? Seems to be pretty rare but several members have them and I saw one for sale not that long ago. Any information on these sharks (or others) would be greatly appreciated.

While that is a good rule of thumb I can see all of the Canadian stuff on the American eBay. I believe the Canadiana shark is "rarer" than the Canadiana 430.

first let me say, "These are my opinions"!
To be honest, the Canadiana shark I don't feel is rare, it may be hard to get, but rare, I don't think so. The problem with the Canada stuff is that everyone bids on it when it appears on eBay which drives the price up. I passed on several Canadiana shark's, C430's, and the caboose before I finally decided to pay the money and get them.
Rare legends, I'm not talking about TYCO's from the 50's or 60's, those are considered rare because they are roughly 60 years old and many did no survive. The legends I'm talking about are the ones from the mid 80's, right before TYCO shut their doors. Those would be the N.P. and the S.F shark, the W.P. caboose, and the F-9A Cotton Belt. I have seen the N.P. shark only twice on eBay in 7 years. One was in a lot and it looked beat up, so I passed. The 2nd was mis-marked and I just happened to see it and won the auction. In that same time frame, I seen two S.F. sharks on eBay and both times they went over $100. I could not justify biding on those because there were so many TYCO's I still needed. I only seen one W.P. caboose and I won that for a ridiculous amount. What I consider the holy grail of TYCO is the Cotton Belt F9A. I only know two people who have one, and other than those two, I have not spoken to anyone who has seen one in person. I'm willing to bet that it would break the $500 mark on eBay if one appeared.

Very interesting and insightful information. My eyes are peeled for a Cotton Belt F9! It just seems to me that there are a lot more Canadiana 430s than sharks. Personally I think 100+ for the S.F. shark is a little too much. The one on eBay right now is in "ok" condition. The Santa Fe logo on the front is peeling off and while it would make a great piece in my collection I'm afraid I'm going to pass. Is the NP shark the "rarest" of them all? Or would you say the S.F. is on the same level? Also I forgot to ask you about the GM&O GP-20. What's the deal with that? Any neat information on that? I have one but couldn't find much on it.

I love talking TYCO, but I never want to seem like a know-it-all, so once again this is only my opinion.
There was a time when I put the GM&O in that rare air status, and when after four years I finally got one, it seemed like the flood gates opened and I seen a few of them on eBay. I guess when people seen what I paid for mine the started selling there's. But for the sake of this conversation, I think I would put it in the rare status, but surely not like the legends.

Alright appreciate the data. I try to find out everything I can about my beloved trains. Tyco is just soooo interesting! I value your input quite a lot. It appears you have quite the collection so your words hold ground with me.

| I thought long and hard about it, I had $175 waiting to push the button but I just could not do it. I have spent so much on trains this year and I told myself no more. For that $175, There are so many trains I could get I just really passed.

That's quite the price. I have a 100 dollar limit on my collectible Tycos. Bummer you or I didn't get it but there's always next time! You could always repaint a Johnson Wax Shark!

Just a thought :). I think it was a good idea to pass on it. The Santa Fe logo on the nose was pretty rough. It did have the original box but I think it's just a better idea to wait for the next one.

| I find it amusing that Santa Fe Warbonnet is the most common paint scheme out there and Tyco never did it on the shark until late in the game.

It is. You'd think that would have been in the first run of production. Apparently it's super rare! Which is cool but makes it very expensive!

You could sell it to a certain forum member (me). It would have to after Christmas. However, the moderator @DanMacK really wants one, probably more than me. I'm sure he would love to have it.

The only NP shark I have seen on Ebay I got for $63. I also found a Candiana Shark for $27. Some yahoo had it in an AHM box and thought it was made by them. No one bid on it except for me. I also have the Cotton Belt F9, once again the only one I have ever seen on Ebay. I still need the SF Shark.

| AF Kid, I got my NP shark off eBay because he labeled the auction "N Pacific"! After 3days he had not bids or watchers. I stumbled across it by accident and asked would he end it early. He did and sold it to me for $30. About 2 years earlier I seen one in a lot sale on eBay and you could barely see it, but what I seen it was best up So I passed. I have never seen the cotton belt F9A on eBay or it would have been mine. Only ones I looking for is that one and the C430 Great Northern Railway, after that I'm done buying.

Have to get so many more sharknoses. Not to mention I still need to get 2 more Spirit of 76 430 variations (I have both already but I need them MIB.) Also gotta get those early production Spirit of 76 boxcars, and countless other Tyco trains. I'm not even going to bother trying to track down a Cotton Belt F9.

Reading this thread I came to a horrible realization...
I have the distinct memory of going to the flea market when I was 8 years old and seeing a table with a box of Santa Fe locomotive shells, just the shells, but there were more than I could count. Probably 60-70 of the AHM C-liner... and at least 20 sharknoses! If my memory does not deceive me there were only the two types of shell stacked in the box. I was only 8, but my god, if I had known they weren't junk...

Well the AHM ones aren't really worth that much. If it was a whole lot of Tyco Santa Fe sharknooses/sharkneese then that would have been quite the score.

I had a really nice Johnson wax Shark several months ago and almost had to give it away, I think it brought around $12 on ebay. I've seen them on there since, and they weren't getting any bids. The D&H Sharks don't seem to bring much either. I did see a Johnson's wax caboose listed the other day for just a few bucks. The market is fickle, the value is only what someone is willing to pay.
