So, as I was wondering why my newly bought Atlas RS-1 won't work, I kept looking at the board. It had a lot of IC chips, which I realized after looking at the "board" in my Bachmann B30-7 DC models tend not to have. After some googling, it turns out it had a NCE DA-SR board put in, a board designed for "drop-in" installation in Atlas, Kato, and Life-Like models including the Atlas RS-1. Aha! I thought, I've found why it won't work. Time to sell it at considerable profit and go find a DC model. Except, on the page for the DA-SR board, it noted the following " Improved DC operation (with lighting effects)". Well, shoot, mine doesn't do anything and the board is supposed to allow improved DC operation? After some more googling, I found out that a few DC power packs don't like to play nice with DCC equipped engines. After researching my power pack, I found out it's a relatively cheap and basic DC model packed with Lionel starter sets in the 70s and 80s. So maybe, since it's a fairly basic and cheap power pack, it doesn't want to play well with DCC models, that or the previous owner ****ed up the DCC board installation and that's why he pawned it.

Some decoders also allow you to turn DC mode off. If you have a friend with DCC, ask them to turn the appropriate CV to ON and then see if it works.
