Hi guys. I recently acquired a cool NP Sharknose. Turns out they were made one year only (1982.) I have a couple of questions about this model.

-If it was one year only why is it so rare? Let me explain. The Western Pacific GP-20 was one year only as well (1981 I believe) but it is still fairly common. This is the first time I have ever seen a NP Sharknose come up for sale.
-Do you guys have an example of this loco? I'm just trying to gather some data on it's rarity.

Anyways enjoy a picture of it with my D&H Sharknose.

Is there really anything you don't want? If you really wanted that WP GP-20 you could probably find one for around $50. Thats how much they tend to go for. They come up every once in a while.

I've seen a few NP sharks here and there this year, but yes they are rare. I found out the hard way that the NYC are at least as rare, if not more so.
The NP sharks certainly have 3 screw motors don't they? Power truck in the front I'm sure.
I managed to dig up 3 NYC Sharks over the summer, no easy feat. Every one of them had the old single screw PT, and they all have the power truck in the rear. They were made that way because the wiring harnesses were unmolested and were wired that way. They're all running, still with PT power.

I'm probably going to hang on to them, I use the first pair on coal drags running AA powered and the third is a spare. They pull well when you double them up.

Great find, I got mine from eBay about two years ago. Even though the GM&O GP20 and the NP Shark was only made one year, they must have not manufactured as many sharks as the geep. Where did you find your at?

I knew you had to have one. Based on the stuff you upload and say it appears you fall in under the serious Tyco collector category. A catagory I am trying to put myself in. I bought this one off of eBay as well. I've managed to score some seriously nice stuff when looking up the term "ho scale train lot."

time warp - I hate the break it to you, but the NYC shark is not rare and certainly not as rare as the NP shark. The NP shark is a legend along with the Cotton Belt F9, which in my opinion is are two of the top five rarest TYCO 's out there. I have almost all of the TYCO trains, the only ones I need are the really ultra rare ones, the one most serious TYCO collectors need. I recently acquired another car off the top five rare list, the Western Pacific Caboose. I have wanted one for years and I had never seen one come up for sale anywhere. So about 3 months ago one came up and I paid over $300 bucks for it, something I would never do it again, but I don't regret it.

News to me! I figured it had to fairly rare as I have never seen one for sale before. So the low price of 50 dollars seemed like a great deal. What are the rarest Tyco engines? My guess is that the Austrailian 430 is in that list.

I appreciate the info, GG1 guy. I bought mine for nostalgia, not rarity. I was surprised how hard they were to find, so I figure they're not common for sure. The NYC's I've found all have single screw PT's so I know they are all early production apparently.
The most common sharks are almost certainly the Rock Island, maybe followed by Midnight Specials?
I found a Yellow/ Blue Santa Fe 430 a couple days ago, never saw that before.

The interesting thing is that the NYC and D&H Sharks are actually the same locomotive. The NYC Sharks were traded in and ended up going to the Monongahela, sold for scrap later except the 1205 and 1216 which ended up in D&H paint.
Neat fact: Louis Marre witnessed one of the original NYC Sharks cranking out 1600 H.P. on the dyno towards the end of their careers, and the unit had never been overhauled! I love em!

Yep, they are still there! Those are the only surviving RF 16 sharks. D&H 1205 and 1216, ex Monongahela, ex New York Central 1205 and 1216.
My pair of PT powered Tycos do the same thing as the real Sharks did: lug coal drags. The original NYC Shark fleet ran out of Beech Grove, Indiana.

They've been stored for many years, I think in Wisconsin. One of them has a scored crankshaft. They are both repairable but not going anywhere, at least for a while. Their last service was on the Wisconsin Central I think, they were well liked for their smooth ride.

Time Warp - $50 bucks is not a bad price, I never criticize any collectors for what they pay for a train. There is a NYC shark on eBay right now! Also, what makes the QR C430 rare is the fact that your not really going to find it on the U.S. eBay, to find that and the other Australia TYCO's you have to log on to the Australian eBay page. Hell, in one money I won two of them and there was another one up for auction.

I bought my 4th NYC a couple days ago on EBay for $35, but there is another one on there at the moment. I don't need 5!
I think the $50 remark was the NP.
I agree that I wouldn't criticize what someone pays for something, value has nothing to do with price.

So YOU'RE the one who I was bidding against on those past 2 locos. I was kicking myself over that one the other night. Glad I won the last one though. It'll look nice sitting next to my NP, D&H, and RI sharks. Now all I need is the SF, Johnson Wax, Canadian , and all the other common ones!

You got a better deal than I did! Congratulations! I actually was going to bump the bid on the one you got, but I fell asleep. I hope yours runs as good as mine. My AA pair on the coal drag got gutted and updated to late PT's, switched to front drive and black sideframes( they look MUCH better that way). Sweet running locos. I'm glad we've got something in common.

I'll probably keep it like it is. I'm sure it will run fine. If it doesn't then it will get an MU-2. It was a good deal, I'm very happy it's going to be in my collection.

Thanks. I'm really glad to have it. It's the centerpiece of my Tyco Sharknose collection. Love the paint scheme on it. It's a real piece of art.

They are pretty rare but I have seen quite a lot of them come up in the few months. I would label them as "uncommon" more so than "rare". The current number I have seen is at a 4. Which, is 4 times as many as the NP Shark! I would love to get my hands on one. May have one soon!

As is the case so often with Tyco, it is hard to understand why they only released 2 road names out of 8 that are correct for the shark nose. The D&H and New York Central models are the same locomotive. Also, it looks like it would have been natural for Tyco to release this locomotive with the correct Pennsylvania and Baltimore Ohio paint jobs. Elgin, Joliet&Eastern, Pennsylvania, Baltimore & Ohio, and New York Central were the only original buyers. Odd that they painted most of them as Rock Island

It appears that Tyco considered itself to be in the trainset business. Often, the most obvious difference between a trainset toy and a serious model is the color. Toys tend to be vivid, bright and eye catching to bring out the kid in all of us. Models tend to be more subdued and true to life.

That red and yellow Rock Island scheme was about as vivid as they come. Note that another super-popular trainset paint scheme at that time was Chessie. Lots of color there, too.

Not a Tyco, but I have a Santa Fe shark from Roco/Model Power.
And I agree with the "Canadian" (ugh) sentiment.
Roco also did (or overdid) the foobie thing with CN/CP , and that unexplained 510 road number.
Just an opinion.
