* The name Varney is known by us old modelers. Well Gordon Varney seems to have produced a little something for Modelers to be able to display a Varney model on their desk or on a glass windowed curio shelf in ones dining room or where things of sentimental value are displayed. Even at work on ones desk or workbench.

* Recently I came across a Varney single dome tank car. BECCO. I have the car already in my collection but here it was on a display stand. On the bottom of the stand is the Varney name, The city, and state where Varney was located, and even a Varney part Number. Never seen one before. Is this a item made and listed in their catalog. I don't think so. Made as a special order for the BECCO company as a holiday gift for some employees. I have no Idea. All I can do is share this item with you.

* * Maybe someone who does know something of this display train can tell us all.

Well I am still trying to find out something about this Varney car display. I did find out that Gordon Varney never released a BECCO tank car. The BECCO car was made and released as it appears here between 1959 and 1962. The Varney company was under the control of Sol Kramer at this time. It was Mr. Kramer who had the Becco chemical tank car produced and released. It was released as you see it with the safety platform and high side ladders. Two other cars were made the same way. This info I got from members of the Yahoo Group "vintage HO". Very knowledgeable people with good info.
Also told me that the 42 zip code on the base bottom matches the time period also. The new 5 digit zip started in 1963 before the car was rereleased again in 1967.
* So I do have a Varney made display car that has no catalog reference for it. I wonder how many were made and why?

The black Varney Mount was a standard stock item, that Varney used for promotional cars. I have five or six Varney cars with this mount, all but one are uncatalogued.

Your BECCO Tank Car is a cataloged item (TW-201) produced from 1959 thru 1962, with black lettering.
Varney are also made a BECCO Tank Car (2466B) from 1967 thru 1968. These cars have green lettering.

I never seen them before I got this one. Will you be posting your cars on their display stand. Then Varney assembled them and used them for promotional displays at trade shows? I have not seen any Varney cars cataloged as display items, assembled and on the display stand. The BECCO I have listed in a flyer I have. A photo of it is there and a list of 3 cars. Becco, Union Carbide green & white, and Petra-Tex , silver. Nothing is mentioned of a display stand.

Frank, the mounted cars were small runs that private companies ordered for promotional purposes.

The ones I have:

General Transportation, Tank Car, with platform, Black with Gold Stickers "Sharon Testimonial, March 6, 1962" GATX 90000.

FMC Covered Hopper #26022, All Silver. The cataloged version (#2561F), 1967-1968, is Red with a Silver or Black cover.

Houston Chemical, Tank Car, with platform, White, HOUX 901. The cataloged version (#2466H) 1964-1966, is White, SHPX 2142.

Nibroc Towel, Tissue, Brown Company, Box Car, Yellow & Green, has no number.

Goodyear, Tank car, Blue, White & Yellow , Varney T-9 or #2466GY, 1957-1961, ULTX 25149. This is a mounted cataloged car.

Mounted cars, that I am aware of:

ACL, White covered hopper, ACL 86865

Wyandotte, tank car, with platform, silver, GATX 73440.

Bill waw47; What about this BECCO tank car I have. Is it also some kind of a promotional car. It is the first one I have ever seen. Is there a list somewhere for these cars, or is it just what you find.

Does the " all but one are uncatalogued ". mean all but one are not Varney cataloged cars. I do see on your list " Wyandotte, tank car, with platform, silver, GATX 73440".
Is this the uncatalogued car, or are you saying that the cars listed on their mounts have cataloged numbers.

The Goodyear Tank Car is a cataloged item, all the rest of the cars (including the Wyandotte Tank Car) are not cataloged cars. With the exception of the Goodyear Tank Car, none of the other cars are found in Varney Catalogs.

Outside of what waw47 sent me I know of no more Display stand mounted varney cars. I do know that 3 Varney Chemical tank cars with safety platrorm and long ladder were cataloged and sold. They can be seen on this 1961 product flyer page.
