While visiting my storage building for a grueling day of tree-through-wall removal ( didn't get it done ), I managed some railfanning in the morning before I got started this past Saturday. Was taking some pictures of a 1913 bridge , and a freight came rolling slowly into the Crewe, VA NS freight yard. I quickly pulled over to the side of the road, and got some pictures. THen I went up to the Valero gas station, where the "front" end of the train was, a NS caboose in highly covered graffiti was leading a pair of diesel in the rear as pushers. I saw no engineers in the train cabs, so I may assume that the caboose operater WAS the remote driver? Not sure. But it's the first time I've seen a working caboose in a LONG time. Thought you guys might like to see some of the pictures I took.

Jerry

And a few graffiti covered boxcars, outside braced steel ones. How old are these?

In the third picture, there's an engineer in the cab of the end unit. He's wearing a green safety vest. The caboose is very likely there just because of the long backing move that this train apparently does.

Wow, way to spot that guy! I had to look closely to see what you meant. Yup, you were dead on! I missed him totally.
