Starting off this week's post, something unusual. How about a "baby" GG1 ? Made from an AHM model, it was cut in the middle, the power truck mounted , and the two trucks on either side. Pretty nifty conversion, the guy I bought it from said it did run at one time, but the motor has been removed. I made sure the main drive had the gears in it, and wasn't the dummy. So it can be repowered eventually. Most people just cut one in half like the one used to shove others around the maintenance area, but this is so nicely done, you can't even see the seam in the shell. Hope to make it a priority project one day.

Jerry

Nice work on that!
Very close to a P5a.
Did it come with pantographs?

My car of the week is something I have been wanting for a long, long time; but the prices always seem to go high on eBay. Finally, thanks to Chops, I finally got a Bachmann Burlington Route 4-8-4!! I have all the other Bachmann 4-8-4's, but this one was hard to get. Even though the driving wheels are out of sync, I think he sold it to me waaaaaaaay to cheap, so I'm going to send him something good in return. Thanks Chops!!!

My LOTW is an H0 scale IHC Premier Edition GG1 in Amtrak livery.

No, they're missing. Not too hard to get those though. I think Bowser carries the parts for them.

One of my early rail fanning trips, must have been right around 1975, I saw
a GG1 blasting down the NE Corridor hauling a ratty old dog train at speed.
I was marked for life. I love anything GG1, anytime, anywhere. I like this
"goofed" picture because it reminds me of that early sighting of one of the
last of these juice jacks in the last days of revenue service.

Glad you like the Northern GG1. I especially like that
Kraft behind it. Looks to be the start of a fine
looking "white train." I like the B&W contrast.

I had to let it go cheap because who is going to
buy a broken train on ebay? I don't have time
to fix it.

Anyways, guys: I have a few more NIB AHM
switchers, diesels in perfect factory mint
condition I'd like to move... PM me or
check my store at "Chops124" on Fleebay.

Will give TFer's a big discount !

Micro, the problem with that is that the original Kader-developed plastic axles are molded in such a way that they are prone to breaking in half at their central joint. This affects the Lionel HO Northerns and the original Bachmann Northerns.

They can, but it's apparently a pain in the butt. I imagine the best way to do it would be to drill out the middle of the axle shafts with a fine drill bit and insert a rod.

The Bachmann ones, like any Bachmann engine from that time, have the additional problem of the gears being prone tosplitting. They're made of that semi--transparent off-white plastic that a lot of plastic gears are made of, and at the time of production many manufacturers (Bachmann among them) had inconsistent success getting the mix right. This issue varies from batch to batch, of course. It's the easier thing to deal with though.

That's a cool little engine. With that articulation, it ought to be flexible enough to pull very well for its weight. It would have been neat to see its prototype in operation. It's a true Mallet with articulation and compound expansion, so the exhaust would have an unusual sound.

My LOTW is a Tyco Union Pacific E7. The couplers are currently being painted, hence their absence in the photo.

I wish I had some too, or the old Mantua kits (though I'll run any maker's cars with any maker's engines) just to have something from a Tyler family brand for her. Almost bid on one this weekend since somebody has a bunch, but the only one that wasn't driven up early by a spike bidder (probably didn't find it. This person drove the bid on all the others up to $4.25. When the bids started at 99 cents and there were only 1 or 2 bids on the items previously) still wound up passing (thanks to the shipping for me being nearly $10) what I felt like spending in the wake of a big parts purchase.
