after several years of patient waiting, i have finally secured a canadiana sharknose.
there was one on ebay that closed today. i was at work when it closed, despite my best efforts to be home before that. the joys of waiting for customers to send orders through.
i got home an hour after closing, to find i had been outbid. [if anyone was the winner here, i would love to know!]
but, there was an email from the seller/ebay offering me a second chance, which i took gladly. so either they had two, or they had a shill bidder? i really dont know, but im happy either way.
it will go with my other pieces from the range
the sellers photo
my photos:

looking forward to receiving it. the last items i got from quebec [the loco with the handrails above] took 3 months to arrive. heres hoping lower ontario is a bit quicker.
PS: if this is in the wrong spot, feel free to move it.

I suspect that if a seller responds to you quickly with a 2nd Chance offer, there has been a shill bidder. what is the likely-hood that the highest bidder would within minutes contact the seller and say Oh, I've changed my mind? NOT likely. I had a 2nd chance offer once within 10 SECONDS of the closing of the auction. What?! I complained to Ebay, and they said prove it, basically. Then the seller harassed me for NOT accepting the offer! ( Which is why I complained to Ebay in the second place, which they did nothing about either...this was way back, though, like 1999 ). And even threatened to sic Ebay on ME. I've had legit 2nd chance offers after a reasonable period of time ( 1-2 days ), but a 10-second offer? Nope, I'll rebid if I want it. I didn't bother on that piece, though. Good engine you got, long as you're happy with it and the price, you're good. :)

That is really a terrific collection. My efforts at trying revive a Tyco Shark did not go well, and after a while Wildecoupe came to rescue and fitted a Model Power chassis into the shell. Not a perfect fit, but close. I have some good Model Power shark chassis, new, for $10 plus shipping if that becomes of interest.
And yes, it is in the wrong spot! It needs to be here on MY LAYOUT!!!!

cheers, all
pge, ive had the shipped email and i know canada post is really slow. pity theres no tracking available, but im prepared to wait. this one was from etobicoke, so hoping it will be a tad quicker given its proximity to toronto airport.
if there was a shill, i dont mind much. had i been home, i would bid higher, so to get it a bit less than my max is ok. its the first shark ive seen on ebay, so wasnt willing to let it go, except for something beyond my control.
chops, i will keep that in mind, thank you. seller said it ran well, so heres hoping.
dacheez, nice duo

Really a lovely piece, I've been scouting around for a few years myself trying to get that exact one. I am an expat Canadian and get all crinkly every time I see a Maple Leaf.
My NOS Midnight Special ran fabulously for about 9 yards, until it burst into a gray cloud of smoke pouring out the windows. There are a few good DIY PT motor repair things on U Tube, and so I was able to get it running again. From that point on it was a series of frustrations relating to the yoke not allowing free movement, traction tire headaches.
It would require someone with a lathe to trim a millimeter or two off the Model Power chassis, and the trucks are just a smidgen off even so, but perhaps the Tyco gods will smile on you and you'll not have these headaches.

Speak of the debil, I stumbled over this RI unit I paid a buck for. Don't work. I am seeing if Wildecoupe will grind this one down for me as well. I'm offering a vintage Varney piece as a sacrifice upon the altar of the Tyco gods.

nice sharks. they are better looking front on. lol.
chops, what do you mean when you say "grind down"?
i have a friend who is an expert repair man, so if need be it will join the line at his house. seems every week he takes more repair jobs for various club members. i will likely send it his way for a service at the very least.
im not a canadian, but i wish i was. been twice, and miss both the place and the people when im not there. even have a maple tattoo in the colors of the flag.

I can't see the difference, but I'll take your word on it.
By "grind down" I mean to use grinding wheel to peel off a millimeter or two around the entire circumference of the die cast Model Power chassis, as if you whittling it. The metal chassis is a tad to long and a tad too wide to fit the typical Tyco shark shell, though it is close.

gotcha. thanks for that.
GG-1, do you mean every loco, or that the shark and standard have different ones? i will have to wait til mines in hand to do any comparisons. if you are meaning my two diesels have different front noses, the one without handrails was missing the decal, so i replaced with a standard sticker.

The sharks all have crisp maple leafs while the Alcos have red blobs. The Alcos were released mid-late 1970's but I've always wondered if the sharks came out later. In 1982 Tyco released their Northern Pacific shark which from my understanding is just as rare as the Canadiana shark. Maybe NP wasn't the only new shark added in '82 and there is a correlation. That's just speculation though...

much to my surprise, i got home from work to a parcel from toronto! yep, inside was the sharknose, much faster than i could have ever predicted!!
i havent run it yet, as i dont have a layout at home, but will try it tonight at the club, and then send it home with our repair man for a service and clean. its missing a step on the other side at the rear, but thats not a major.

Looks very nice. I look forward to videos of it in action.
You should get yourself a circle of E-Z track or the like so that you can at least have something at home.

will take the camera tonight and video it running. thanks for the suggestion, wouldnt have thought of it otherwise. wont be a very exciting video, as its committee night, so wont have any rolling stock behind it. plus our layout is a major work in progress, with double tracking being near to completion.
i dont have space to set track up, as HO scale is a side hobby. i mainly run tomy trains, the childrens battery range.

shot some videos tonight. theres a slight tilt to it... looks like one of the bogie boxes is a bit loose, allowing the body to lean slightly, so it looks like its going fast around corners while not moving at all, lol. seems to run smooth enough though.
heres the video. only a short one on part of the layout. i am hopeless with editing video, so cant "stitch" the other two parts together. [couldnt work out how to embed either] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2xg0OIsvUL8
its a new zealand model railway club, but i prefer to run canadian over anything else, for the most part. other members run american, british, german and new zealand stuff. its a good club, has a good group in it, and the main layout is a work in progress. we have several portable layouts running HO, N and Z, and another fixed N scale. our website http://wanganuimodelrailway.weebly.com/

Thanks for the vid, she looks very nice running.
Regarding what I said about getting a circle of E-Z track, I suggested that because a 3-foot circle doesn't take up much space and E-Z track is good for temporary setups.
Tomy trains are fun, I've got some of the older Thomas ones. Thomas, Lady, Annie, Clarabel, 1 Troublesome Truck, and a modest amount of track including one drawbridge with broken-off rails.

you are right, zelda. a circle wouldnt take up any space, could be put together when needed. will have to think about that.
i am getting the couplers converted to ez mate mark 2 centre shank mediums to match everything else a friend and i run. luckily i found a pair on a junker tanker, as i couldnt find any for a suitable a price. heaps on ebay and amazon, but the shipping kills it. almost be cheaper to fly over myself. i did find some in aussie, but was going to be $70NZD for 10 pairs. $4.50 each plus $20 post.
the tomy range is pretty good. i really like the older stuff, as the new trackmaster is rubbish. the drawbridges almost always have broken rails. i think ive only ever found one that was complete.

Well, when I got the set back in 1998 the rails were intact, but, well... I was rough on toys. Plus I tended to leave them out where parents could step on it, and as we all know proximity to train track on the floor reduces most parents to the coordination of someone who's had a tankard of tequila.

zelda... yes, the pitfalls of building on the floor. ive almost done the same myself many times, lol
chops, thank you for the compliment on the club layout. i can take no credit in its construction. that whole bridge section was rebuilt by our current president and treasurer over several months. the trestle bridge in the foreground was built many years ago by another member who i believe has since died, and the treasurer made some repairs on it.
if you do come here, you are more than welcome to visit the club rooms. just let me know.

I hate to bump topics, but is the OP's Shark with the correct trucks? I am thinking about swapping out the PT motor (and therefore trucks) and have a number of F-units lying about with the same trucks.
Sadly, my RI Shark is just a bit too wobbly for my liking and likes to stall on clean track while my other locos just keep going, including others with only four wheel pickup. Ironically, the motor itself runs fine, it's the drive wheels and poor pickup that is the main problem. Also, the motor might run fine without any load but it seems a bit weak, as it will only pull a train when almost at full throttle (e.g. beyond 8 volts). Hopefully it doesn't have weak magnets, as when I bought the loco the motor was just about seized and chock full of dust, although the body was mint. The metal spindle gear is also a bit worn but I don't think that affects it, it just makes the loco more noisy when going forwards (it actually sounds like a car reversing when going backwards). Either way, I'm looking at swapping in a Frateschi 8-wheel-drive underframe (the donor Powerilne/Linkline F7 has a broken pilot, no steps and a missing horn).

| OP's truck frames appear to have been swapped at some poimt. Those are the frames generally found on Tyco's F9 and GP20.
