I pulled my back Friday after a long hard week of mowing lawns, so Saturday I worked on attaching a 3 foot length of flex track to two stringers and got two bents attached. This morning I got the rest of the bents attached, then worked on the side bracing and gerts, got all of those attached too. I used a pair of nippers and cut some pins from the sewing kit short for spikes to put the bracing and gerts on to the bents, the stringers are attached to the bents with small finishing nails set with a nail set. The rails are set to the tracks with short pins pushed into the wood with a nail set. Next I will work on hand rails with even smaller strips of balsa wood. I used elmers white glue on all joints. I will paint the entire trestle a nice dark brown black to look like it is covered in creosote, but leave the rails a redwood color. I still have a lot of balsa wood. the container they are in is 1 foot across and most is 3 feet long, a few dowels are 4 feet long.

Very nice work and neatly done!

As a prototype tip, if you have any really small sticks (approximately 1/16 x 1/16), having them on top of the tie ends parallel to the rails would look like how the full-size railroads have timbers to keep a derailed train car from wandering over the edge.

You mean like these platforms? Now I need to make the hand rails. So far with the platforms there are 498 pieces comprising the trestle.

Bears a close resemblance to St. Patrick's Cathedral in downtown El Paso.
At one time it had a recording of bell music wired up. This was built by
Jose Enrique of the El Paso Railroad Model and Historical Association back about 1986.
Yes, Micro, that is a Piper Bonanza having difficulties in the background.
I don't know who stuck that in there, but it wasn't me.

Got all the posts on for one side, including notched posts for the landings, they came out even, 4 to either side of the landings and 20 in between, all spaced three rails apart, 42 posts in all, there will be one or two more on the other side with no landings. I want to put a ladder on the trestle that goes from the top to the bottom to one side of the center, it would be a 90 foot ladder. So far at this stage there are 540 pieces, will go much higher with the other sides posts, the hand rails and the ladder, to about 700, maybe a few more.

This morning I got the first set of handrails in, the top set, then I will put on the lower set. The space between the posts is even the entire length of the trestle, so there will be exactly the same number on the opposite side. I think I want two ladders on the front, one on one of the longest bents and one on a short bent, that would make for a 90 foot and a 30 foot ladder and total of pieces to 727.

I got all the hand rails done this morning and added thread to the poles for additional realism. It is basically 99% done, 594 pieces so far including the poles. I have the two ladders to make and that will add at least another 134 more pieces.

I finished the trestle today, made the 30 foot and 90 foot ladders and their supports, 40 pieces for the 30 foot ladder and 115 for the 90 foot ladder and that brings the total pieces of balsa wood to 746.

I cannot tell you how much I hate those plastic poles, the insulators keep snapping off and worst of all are that they are plastic. I took my smallest dowels, put them in the chuck of my drill and using two wood rasps, ran the precut dowels through for the right diameter and taper, plus it gave the wood a texture. I notched the pole with a hacksaw for cross pieces and used small hard metal wire to create V supports that fit into a notch on the pole and holes drilled in the cross piece, I used short pins and glass beads pushed into premade holes for the insulators. I tapered the bottom and predrilled two holes for finishing nails to hold the poles to the trestle. They seem very strong so far.

I was talking with one of my clients yesterday, he is a contractor and I thought he might want to see the trestle. I then told him about the HO set I got last month at the thrift store. He told me that he had taken that very same HO set to the thrift store for one of his clients, they could not get it working so she told him to donate it or toss it. This woman is 93 and it was her husbands train set, funny thing is that I work for her son. There are only about 19,000 people in the town I live in, so the odds that I might know the person who used to own the set were pretty good, but I did not know I would know the person personally. I have met the woman who's husband owned the set I bought for $3.95. The 1952 Lionel O scale I saved from the trash belonged to my client who is the contractor, the balsa wood I saved from dumpster doom was from one of his places I helped cleanup.

I used some 1 x 6 cedar to make an armiture that will both hold the trestle and be part of the valley when I build the second table. That way when I need to work on that table, I can remove the trestle, its portion of river and landscape to get it out of the way. It also makes a sturdy platform and display for the trestle till I get the table set up for it.

I had the plan for the trestle all made up my head, so went out to the garage and put it together in about 2 hours, I think I will want a third 2 foot table extension making the layout 4 x 10 when it is done. Beyond the trestle will be a steep gorge going up a mountain side. To the left of the table will be the extension and a tunnel into a mountain side and come out another tunnel at the back right side of the table and onto the first table. The backside will be open and the front view terra formed and landscaped.
