I recently purchased a Mantua 4 6 2 from the early 70's. It runs well in reverse but choppily forward. Anyone had this problem or know how to fix it? Thanks.

Have you checked for the usual culprits of gunl, hair, burrs, etc fouling the pilot's freedom of movement, and to make sure the pilot is facing the right way? A fouled pilot is less of a problem in reverse because it's just getting towed along, but going forward...

Well I recently cleaned and lubricated it, it had some sticky residue on it. It helped overall performance but it's still poor going forward.

I don't think pickup is the issue here though, given the symptoms.

You need to specifically check the pilot truck's axles and orientation. The slot in it might look dead center, but it isn't.
Also check for things like bent valve gear.

I did take it apart and clean all the pieces. As you said, the valve gear was slightly bent so I fixed that to the
best of my ability.
I tested it and it ran better. Thanks

Did you clean out the motor commutators? That might make a bit of a difference.
