I bought one of those GM&O steamers, mint but no box at a show. I almost fell over when the guy told me three bucks. I had to ask twice to make sure he was sure.
It went off on eBay for $100.
I just picked up some things today including two of those Sunoco tanks. The Pepsi boxcar and Coke cars used to be harder to find and worth a little more. And the Rolling Bridge kit was another one that brings decent money.

I sent a copy to a printer friend of mine and he said it looks like the red color never got printed on the side. Maybe this is an error that never got caught by QC or maybe and employee grabbed it from the reject bin. Who knows?

I would not pay more than $80 for that one because all of the steps look to be broken off and the clear shell are either Santa Fe or CP rail. I have had three of the CP rails, but for Christmas I sold off two of them. I also put on here a few months ago a guy in NC who has one for sale. it has some damage on the right corner but he was selling it for $80. notice the red lines in mine:

Loco has broken stirrups, it is worth in $40 to $60 range. I would asked the seller for his source on the number of units produced.

I'm quite sure they made more that 50 of the clear units, like I said, I can account for 10% of them.

There are at least three versions of the clear F7.
Clear with no striping and a single motor.
Santa Fe striping with a single motor.
Canadian Pacific striping with double motors.

A REALLY RARE product that so far has no evidence of existing outside of the catalogs would have to be the TYCO decorated layout mat, item 7930. It has only been listed in the 1975 catalog so far, but it may have been available a little longer than that.
It was made out of a foam-like material, to soften the sound of the trains running on the track (like a cork roadbed.) I'm guessing it didn't sell well, as I imagine many people that wanted to build the Layout Expander System preferred to do their own landscaping for greater realism (I know I would.) Sure, TYCO didn't make any landscaping material, but consumers could easily just go to AHM, Life-Like and Woodland Scenics's lines of railroad landscaping products (Bachmann didn't start making them until 1978-1979.)

Yes, but I meant the mat. Anyone can build the layout expander system with just about any type of HO track (with or without blocking, depends if you're running trains via analog or DCC). But the mat is described and shown in the 1975 catalog page here:

Yes, that is interesting to me, as well. Is it a mat?? Is it a foam core?? And it appears narrower than the standard 4x8, does it not? But it could not be, to accommodate a minimum 18 inch radius.
And the overlay- that appears to be paper? I'd like to know what the gray roadbed is, I can't tell from the photo. To approximate the roadbed on the Expander Layout I settled on a leopard print felt.
In my version, I am planting a Tyco Strap Hanger loop in the center of the village.
By way of comparison, Hornby OO makes some mats designed for the space-challenged British modeler. Their track schematics are surprisingly complex and interesting, and fit a dauntingly small area.

Yes Chops, it is a mat, it reminds me of a Astro-turf mat that has the painted roadbed on it which you lay the track on top of. They are rare, but I see them from time to time on eBay.

I got a couple of these, which somehow escaped the last thinning of the herd. Might as well try to unload some, only one is really what I need.
Got a few more items, like the Athearn Snowbird all powered ABA trio, and most of the 35 NH boxcars. It is unlikely I will have the place to run a 25 foot train, anymore. Hmmm. Maybe I keep one Snowbird. The Athearn shell is wicked hard to find, and any BB is always a good runner.

Ok this should make you all chuckle for rarities. New Haven 50’ plug door. I will be selling one in the spring when I begin listing again. I have kept this variant close to the vest for years.
Of all those items mentioned in this thread I would agree with the old starkist boxcars. Nice pieces. The old metal prr shark is a tough one also.

The Spreckels isn’t too hard to find; I probably have at least half a dozen. However, in my experience it is harder to find than the Holly Sugar. The Brach’s, though, I have seen only two of in the wild, in the 10+ years I’ve been looking.

Very nice bump. I looked for years before I found this matching pair:

New South Wales, made for the Australian market. Tyco did very few items in the Australian paint schemes, and I have no idea what the angle was, other than someone thought it would make money.
I paid under $100, plus shipping, but was prepared, at the time to go over $300 on bidding for them. I was NOT going to let this one out of my sight.
