I received this loco last weekend when I went to Houston to do a closeout and sale from my mother's estate. I think it is a American Flyer 4-6-2 K5 Pacific, S scale. However, I don't know if it is a DC or AC loco. I couldn't find a reversing switch anywhere on the loco or tender. I found a similar one on eBay, but the engine number did not have the AC after it.

There is no pickup for a third rail which makes me tend to think it is a DC. Any help would be appreciated.

I Googled American Flyer 312 AC and got a wiring diagram for an AC unit with a reversing unit in the tender. The picture showed a motor with a field coil which would make it capable of running on AC, unlike a permanent magnet motor.
I'm not sure how the reversing unit works. The Lionel would change directions when the power was interrupted. It seems to me I've heard of a unit that would use some other signal like a short burst of higher voltage or something, but I don't know if that was AF.

Look for the reverse unit lever under the tender floor between the trucks. Lever will lock it in forward or reverse. Power on, moves. Off neutral power again other direction. Changes polarity as AC power trains do not reverse at power supply. The e unit will need cleaning first in order for it to run. It's S gauge. Pre 1955. 4 piece die cast. Link coupler is earlier.

Thanks all. To answer the questions: It is S scale and I believe it belonged to my uncle (on my mothers side). This places the date on it from between the late 40s to the very early 50s. Since I don't do S scale, it'll stay with me as a memento of my late uncle.

After checking the site that Cat linked, it seems that this is the 1949 version. However, the trailing truck on the 1949 version did not have side frames so someone has replaced the original with a truck from the 1950s version.

You might want to set up a small track for this to run on occasionally, do some S scale on the side. It seems like it could be fun - If nothing else, S scale has the advantage of there being no shortage of automobiles available cheap thanks to Hot Wheels.

I've already lined up some track and a transformer. I'm gonna try to service it and get it running.
