It's an older Japanese freight locomotive, "DD51" class. Prototypbe built from 1962-1977. Kinda makes sense that the model would be by Kato, then [:)]

Outstanding work Loco-Sleuth!
How did you make the Japanese connection??? I think you have the same "Trains of the World" book that I have. It has that Chessie Modern Steam pic that you guys were discussing. Was there something in that?

Well, here in North America we think of Japanese railroads, and picture the typical "bullet train"... but there are some wonderfully odd locomotives from Japan... everything from space-age Winnebagos to Jetsons cabs to um, bullet-pelicans. For lack of a better description.
I'm not sure why I thought "Japan"... but when I looked at the listing and it said Kato, I figured it had to be. Stands to reason that Kato (a japanese company) wouldn't soley build models of US prototypes...
At first it kind of looks like to EMD SW_'s connected cab-to-cab, but when you look closely, there's all kinds of extra stuff going on there, that would have taken some real imagination to merely kitbash.

Darn! I Thought I Would Be Able to Spill The Beans. I Like Japanese and British(some) Prototypes. But ALcos Are The Best of The Best!
