While surfing through the HO scale listings on eBay, I noticed a item with the keywords Varney RS-11 Diesel Penn Central "Pulling Power." The photo shows an HO scale RS-11 decorated for Penn Central with its original Varney box. I did not know that Varney lasted into the Penn Central era. When did Life-Like start to market Varney items?

Back in the early 80s, LL put out a series of cars and locos under the "Scene Masters name. The shorty heavy weights passenger cars I have have an obvious Varney/Penn Line heritage. Since Varney was taken over by Penn Line in 1960, they couldn't have put out a PC unit. I'm wondering if it isn't a LL in an original Varney box.
These are 2 of 3 junkers I picked up off of Ebay for nothing that I recoupled with Kadees and replaced the missing wheelsets on the left car with Roundhouse trucks.

Varney just barely does make it into the Penn Central Era. Believe Life-Like buys the tooling and line of Varney trains in 1968. Greenberg's Guide To Varney Trains includes mention of this transaction at the end of the book.
Life-Like's F-7A is ex-Varney and possibly also ex-Penn Line tooling, as are the shorty passenger cars and other items in the Life-Like line. Tony Cook HO-Scale Trains Resource http://ho-scaletrains.net
