Yes, this car exists, I have one. Just when you thought you didn't have to look at Virginian Hoppers again, alas, another Tyco oddity.

So, is it the Virginian stamping for the Operating Hopper applied to the 40ft. Hopper?

EXACTLY - The operating hoppers had the grouped letters to avoid the side bracing while the NON operating hopper's letters were evenly spaced.
Is anyone interested in one?

Please, PLEASE don't tell me I've done wrecked a rare bird. Got this one in a boxlot years back...because it had four broken steps I just carved off the rest, added wire details and paint, some weathering...sigh...be just my luck...[;)]

| Not sure how rare they are to be truthful, but they aren't common. I believe they might be from the red box era.

So what did they do? Bend the stencil to fit?

The one thing I noticed about the operating hopper is it has screws holding the trucks on to the frame. I think this is the first Tyco brown box I've seen with trucks like that. I'm used to seeing snap in trucks. The only other time Ive seen anything similar is in a kit. Is this how it was produced?

Hey, I had one of these in the 1776/1976 Commemorative set. The non-operating hopper one... 40'... I had altered the Virginian a bit... I had a crush on a girl named Virginia... so, the "N"... it went away. Unfortunately, I have no idea where it is now.
I noticed on this one, the 40'er has an "HT" while the operating car has "HM" on the sides.
Uh, our train club owns one of the shorter operating ones, but it has hoop and hook couplers. The trucks are screwed in.
Red Box was from when to when? Brown Box...?
oh, well...
Zzz...
I don't have a one track mind. It depends on the turn-out. "I love your catenary!" Is that a power-trip or just another pick-up line?

No, the operating and non-operating both had unique stencils and road numbers. Apparently a batch or two or three (who knows) of the non-operating models were stenciled with operating model stencils.
