I've never seen AHM use foam in their packing of locos/rolling stock. I've only seen molded plastic inserts. That may have been done by someone who purchased the loco and wanted extra protection for the couplers and loco

Not positive about the foam but never the plastic coupler protectors. probably an owner-added item.

AHM used foam until the late 60's or so. It had a tendency to deteriorate in certain conditions, so the plastic trays are actually better in this case. That switcher looks like it's in mint condition, so maybe they did put guards on the couplers for a time!

The gray plastic tubing was used as coupler protection on AHM Mehano diesels that were packed in foam starting in the early 60's, mostly the C-Liners and BL2's, as well as the locos they produced for ATT and the RS11 for Life-Like.
Ironically, the foam cradles for the Mehano stuff seem to have survived, while the Rivarossi foam universally deteriorated. Different formulations, apparently.
