Brian here. I don't know if many of you have tried to run your tyco mantua diesels or steam on code 83 track. I have a few tyco diesels that seem to run ok on code 83 with stock wheels. I have not tried my steam engines on code 83 yet. Is anyone currently operating their tycos on code 83 track or is every one using code 100? If operating on code 83--has anyone had any problems? Any one modified a diesel by changing wheels out? comments-- suggestions--ideas post.

My layout uses code 83 and I haven't had any trouble with Tyco diesel locomotives. I don't have any Tyco steam locomotives currently, so I can't help with that question. The only locomotive I've had trouble with was a Rivarossi U25C imported by AHM, the flanges were just too deep for code 83.

Bachmann EZ track is code 100. Rivarossi of the older age will not handle 83 rails. I can see Mantua's riding code 83 along with some Tyco's. Atlas, Walthers, and Peco are big on code 83 track.

Just a note - I tried Atlas code 83 and Tyco diesels and steam will de-rail on switches and crossings -at least they did on mine - went back to code 100 - less headache - Peco code 83 is not the same height as Atlas - so Tyco and other older equipment may run on it - Living in the south where summer humidity is miserable and affects everything - keep this is mind if building a layout in a storage type structure or other outdoor structure where heat and humidity along with winter cold will affect track

My Tyco diesel switcher runs fine on Code 83 track... maybe I am lucky?
I am getting a Tyco Santa Fe GP-20 (mainly for collecting purposes) and I do plan to get a Tyco Chattanooga locomotive. I might soon replace the True-Track switches if this goes through...

My main line is code 100 and everything else is 83. never have had any troublewith either my steamers or diesels. The only one that gave me trouble was rivorasi/ahm engines. by simply turnig the wheel sets to N.M.R.A standards they ran fine on 83. as for track I use PECO and use my track gauge to check frogs and points religiously and have no problems

My track is all Atlas, both Code 83 and 100. I run my Mantua steamers all the time, I have run my couple Tyco Alcos on the tracks before and no derailing, no issues. 85% of what I run and own is the old stuff, 60's, 70's, 80's Mantua, Rivarossi, Roundhouse, and Tyco engines. No issues what's so ever with track.

Ironically it's one of Atlas's "Most Frequent Questions."
I pulled this selection from their site.

Literally, the code of a piece of track is the height of the rail in thousandths of an inch (meaning code 83 rail is .083" high; code 100 rail is .100" high). The significant difference lies in the physical appearance of the two types of track. Atlas Code 83 track has fine, brown ties whereas Code 100 has slightly thicker black ties. Because of its accuracy (and the color of the ties), Code 83 is more prototypical, and therefore more realistic than Code 100. Code 83 is known as a finer-scale track, and is the choice of discerning modelers. Atlas carries a full line of both Code 100 and Code 83 products

Simple. Code is the "rail height"....Code 83 is .083 of an inch high from the foot of the rail to the top of the rail head.....

Code 100 is .100 of an inch high from the foot of the rail, to the rail head.

Layman's terms, 83 thousandths "tall" rail, and 100 thousandths "tall" rail... NOT including the ties......
