Get to start it again This weeks contribution is a loco I've been trying to get ahold of for years. It's a Mantua/Tyco 4-6-0 Santa Fe & Disneyland issue. Have only seen three online so far. The first one had loads of missing pieces and the second one was in a junk box. When I saw this one, I jumped on it.
Locomotive
Tender
The nice thing about this loco, is that the tender has all four steps intact. Most are missing at least one if not all.

After I get it, it will get the full overhaul treatment. I'm hoping the the other cars do show up. I have yet to see any of them.

On a Varney binge this week with my OTW posts. Varney F unit that I need to work on, but I love the paint scheme.

I quite like the paint scheme on that interesting item.My LOTW is a Mehano 2-6-0 Mogul in Canadian National livery. Runs pretty good, actually, just kinda slow which apparently that's how it's supposed to run. Oh, and I got it for $25 with an Athearn New Haven caboose.

Interesting. From the looks of the flash in the front cab windows...and the cast on side handrails...is this a later plastic shell? The paint scheme is neat....but how much is original? I can see someone has messed with the number boards. Originally, the boards are at the 45 degree point on the nose, just below the class lights. You can see the discoloration in the paint where the holes were filled. PO moved them back to the pre-1949 position on the sides of the nose without moving the class lights. Well done...and needed to make the point of the arrow look right (if it stopped in the old number boards......)

Going with steam as well this week. A Rivarossi 0-8-0 in IHB. This was in a box that had FOAM in it. It must have sat for a while in a moist environment. Along with the foam sticking to the plastic, the handrails on the foam side had verdigris on them. This came off with emery paper. If anyone has this problem on a loco or car, I found the best thing for removing the foam is your finger! Just rubbing on the residue will remove it without taking off paint or lettering. Evan

http://hoseeker.net/gallery/index.php?album=hotrains2%2Fgilbert-american-flyer&image=American-Flyer-F-3A.jpgScalecraft, that's a Gilbert/American Flyer engine. Gilbert eventually took over their own manufacturing in 1957. Nice engine! More information in the link.

The A. C. Gilbert Company started manufacturing HO Trains in 1938. They contracted with Varney to produced F3 A&B units for the Gilbert HO line from 1955 thru 1959. The Lackawanna A Unit was cataloged from 1955 thru 1956. Gilbert started assembling their Pikemaster F3s in 1961 at their plant in New Haven.

That's actually very interesting. Maybe I should look around for these things at shows.

You're right. I happen to have a Gilbert F from that time period that I know the back story on and it is the same shell. Where I went wrong was believing what was hand written on the box when I bought it at a train show years ago. I believe the confusion came from the fact that Varney stamped their name on the inside of the shell, and there are no other manufacturer indications on the unit. The other Gilbert I have has Gilbert stamped in the gear covers. Thanks for the correction!

My pleasure. My #420 Lackawanna F has the Gilbert name plate on the rear truck. Other than that, everything else has Varney stamped on.

The earliest 420 Lackawanna F3s from 1955 did not come with an A.C. Gilbert coupler plate, all others do.
For those interested in the Varney F3s made for Gilbert, a complete list.

Well, I'll get straight to Point B, forget A...a B unit HI-F unit, wonder how common these are? I don't recall seeing many B units powered this way. Got this in a sale lot last year, haven't done anything with it yet. Actually sitting in my office drawer at work. Speaking of Hi-F's , I'm working on an A unit, just finished isolating the motor tonight, going to install a Decoder in it, to join my Athearn Hustler Hi-F unit. I'm thinking of leaving the shell off and have a bare-bones train behind it, literally, a Zombie Limited. Anyway, enjoy my B unit!
