To be fair the train was NOT of the best quality But I can see the basis for the statement

Which is why people push Lionel or LGB fo the kids

Basically I am going in here nearly blind for I DONOT know anything about the family members or the train set's condition (presumably it is used?I

but I DO KNOW ABOUT TYCO PRODUCTS

And as the seventies wore on the quailty of the Tyco product went down
Basically the Clementine was a varint on the Chattanogga set

and we all know about THAT sets problems

Okay, take a deep breath. Calm....
Is this a large scale Bachmann set, or the half-zero Tyco variant of the Chattanooga?

Hard to answer that question from afar, but there are two types of "those" kids - those evil lil' trolls which delight in destroying their toys, and those that are just inept and careless. I always kept mine in good condition, as my parents weren't going to buy replacements if I broke them! I had to make them last. And I still have both my childhood trains, O-27 and HO gauges, in like-new condition.
Could just be an accident, only the poster knows for sure. I can't criticize what I didn't see or witness. But some kids just don't care how they treat their toys. I always took care of mine. Although I did burn up a Tempo Centercab diesel, probably from lack of lube, I ran it so much. I still have it, I think somewhere. . But most of my trains survived my operating childhood. And you have to supervise those kids to make sure they treat YOUR stuff right, if there is any hint of carelessness or wanton urges of destruction, they should be refused the privilege of playing with "your" toys until they mature. Trust but verify, as Reagan said! Sorry for the loss. Battery acid? That CAN'T be HO, not many HO trains were battery operated.

I got rid of my Chattanoogas recently, one complete, one parts. Someone might have the boiler for ya.
The power brick is a Pancake Trash (PT) block...no batteries involved in the set...so not sure how that transpired.
Find a cheap Chattanooga, swap boiler and power block in.
