I am using kadee # 5 on all my diesels. I am installing couplers by trimming original coupler housing even on truck with a plastic cutter and then using pro-weld plastic welder-attaching kadee housing on truck.TYCO STEAM ENGINES#5 front and rear. trim coupler housing on rear tender truck and attach kadee box to truck. If you have a SHARK NOSE loco #5 on rear and #30 series on front. See kadee chart for 30 series as there are diffrent lenghts to suit your taste. Chart is available on-line or in your walthers catalog. Rolling stock- i use #5 on all. Flat cars--i completely remove original coupler housing with cutter. Using the kadee # 5 box-center on each end of car and attach to body with pro-weld. TANK CARS--trim coupler housing even and attach with pro-weld. COAL HOPPERS-non operating-- trim coupler housing and attach # 5. GONDOLA # 5 mounted on truck-trim original housing even. if you mount to car body coupler is to high. You can mount to body but you will need to make a shim. OPERATING COAL CARS #5. cut original coupler housing off truck or install new trucks as these screw onto car. Drill and tap a 2/56 hole to mount kadee housing to car. BOX CARS-trim coupler housing even and attach#5. CABOOSES/FLOODLIGHT CARS-#5 mounted on truck by trimming original coupler housing. TOOLS I USE TO MAKE THIS FAST ARE AS FOLLOWS= PLASTIC SPRUE CUTTERS-AMBROID PRO-WELD PLASTIC WELD-BONDS PLASTIC IN 10 SECONDS. I hope this info is helpful to anyone wishing to improve their tyco stock. post your comments or thoughts or email if you need pics .KEEP' M ROLL-N Brian--- FOOTNOTE: THIS METHOD I HAVE DESCRIBED WILL KEEP COUPLER HEIGHTS EVEN AND CORRECT WITH KADEE COUPLER HEIGHTH GAUGE. YOU CAN BODY MOUNT ALL TYCO ROLLING STOCK BUT YOU WILL HAVE TO MAKE SHIMS FOR EACH APPLICATION. IF YOU ARE USING CURVED RADIUS BELOW 18-USE METHOD ABOVE AS BODY MOUNTED COUPLERS WILL NOT TAKE SHARP RADIUS'S.

If you are truck mounting the KDs, the # 27 couplers fit into the original Tyco boxes using the T adapter provided.
I like the body mount method Brian describes.
Usually on the diesel locos I fill the gaping hole in the pilot and build a mounting pad for the KD box

Is that a Tyco? The shell looks really nice, if they had one in BN paint, i'd like it

Yep, that's a reworked Tyco shell.
It rides on a scratch-built frame and unpowered AHM trucks.
I have a BN GP 20 I painted around here somewhere. It has the original power-torque drive.
