I'm working on this "switchman's quarters" if you will. Constructed from odds and ends. What I ended up working with didn't have gables. I thought about scrapping some plastic to make some, but then thought of a hip roof. Seems like hip roofs can exude a vintage feel. Befuddled at how to begin, I looked around the web and after a spell found one link that I used that worked out pretty well with not too painful formulae. Here's the link if you are interested (those Brits do some nice model work) . . . http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/20773-scratch-building-a-hipped-roof/
There is one thing I would add, because I stumbled around until I found it, and that is how to determine "ridge length". The link above, while good, does not specify how to determine ridge length. It just tells you to "mark the length of the ridge . . . ".
I suppose ridge length is done "to taste". The only specified formula I saw said that basically it was length of the building minus the width of the building.
Here's a copy of the "template" associated with the link above.

And here's my initial attempt using the information in the link. I'm still checking out the symmetry of the thing and deciding what to cover it with; shingles, tar paper, ? ?.

Looks good! What material did you end up making the roof out of? I'm impressed by the amount of time and research you put in to the small details on your layout. I usually just grab some reference pictures (if that) and start hacking away.

Well I do my share of "hacking"; maybe gradually learning to be more patient versus just slowing with age? Paper template was glued to a piece of cardstock/corrugated that I had that was pretty smooth and about 1mm thick. Thanks for the comments.
