Starting off again this week, this is the 2nd Life-Like FEC gondola I have found within a few months, one at a show, the other at a LHS. I rarely see any FEC cars, are there many others out there at all? I have my FEC BL-2, I think I've seen a few brown boxcars with Florida East Coast on them, but rare to see anything at all. So at least I have something to pull behind my brightly colored BL-2 now, that actually match colors. Am going to try to build a small FEC consist, at this point, a couple BL-2's and two gon's are my current pieces.

This week's COTW for me is a Life Like Oscar Meyer Wiener car. Now I can come up with a variety of different puns from this thing.

Not seen a FEC red gondola before. If I had one, I'd fill it with HO scale oranges or yellow grapefruit, just for laughs.
NCG: never seen that one before.
That MKT lumber (?) car is pretty unusual, too.
Kavocste: you may stop weathering that reefer now.

Here's a very rare Tyco Burlington box car. Probably one of only 600 million in existence today...

I think we need a video of someone pulling about 50 of these BN boxcars (with a BN locomotive and caboose of course!)

* Here is one for the Wisconsin Model train people here. It is a limited addition car of all wood construction, except for metal detail parts. Most likely made and released at a particular National Model Railroad Association event. The road number is the date 1963. The South Central Wisconsin Division of the National Model Railroad Association the show sponsor, and the NMRA logo is on the right side of the car. * The car made for the 1963 train show is one I recognize but cant place the manufacture of it. It is 52 years old if markings are correct as to date. frank

This little goods wagon came in a wind up Hornby set that I rec'd from my folks in 1966 when Dad was on sabbatical at Oxford. The "Golliwog" brand sold jellies, and I have a particularly fond remembrance of the Golliwog brand of black currant jam on an English muffin. The rest of the set is long gone, but this one piece is a survivor and in excellent condition. The locomotive is the same as the one in the original set, but electric, not wind up.
I need to paint the drivers red, by the way, but don't have an idea. I think applying Testor's with a brush will make a mess of it. Any ideas?

I would suggest Floquil (if you can find it) or another brand made for model railroading. Regular model paint is just too thick for the job. I think Polly S is Floquil's successor in that field. If all else fails, you could try to thin Testor's out, but you make not get as good of coverage that way. Using a good primer might help out, with a clear coat on top.

Floquil and Poly Scale were both brands from the same outfit and both have been discontinued. There other brands still out there and cross references of paints to replace the Floquil/Poly Scale colors: http://www.microscale.com/Floquil%20Color%20Chart.pdf http://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/node/14152
Most paints are not completely opaque so it pays to put some sort of light gray primer under most colors to keep the resulting color even.

Very interesting model, I must say, although I don't believe Hornby made anything like that in the 1960's.

A rare find! Something bizarre about that though. When I found mine, it had the totally non-stock combo of Hyatt-roller-bearing trucks and turned-brass wheelsets. So does yours, it looks like. I've never seen another Athearn 40' box that someone put roller bearing trucks on either... what are the odds?
Jerry, FEC cars are not common here either. I can only think of 3 in my collection. - Walthers Ortner aggregate hopper brought back from florida by a late friend of mine - Athearn 89' flatcar that got deracked and patched for AOK as a wreck transporter - One tan-box-era Athearn metal 40' boxcar in the "Speedway" scheme, that the original owner built with the floor 1/8" off-center from the sides, and proceeded to glue together EVERY SINGLE PIECE SLIGHTLY AT AN ANGLE as a result I have to turn the whole thing back into a kit and start over...

Kovacste, your knowledge is amazing. For the first time I can recall, I flipped it over and low and behold, it says Wrenn, Made in England. That opens up a whole new venue for collecting. I had always just assumed it was a Hornby.

My COTW is this here Bachmann HO scale 86 foot autorack in SF paint:
Sorry for most of the pic being out of focus. It was cold out when I took the pic and I didn't wanna be outside for more that 30 seconds to set up a good shot, lol.
I'm home schooled, I love to work on cars and anything with an engine and wheels, I love model RR'ing, and listening to Dire Straits.

Nice looking auto rack. The color is a nice faded shade that looks like well-used railroad equipment.
By the way, if you resize the picture down to about 800 pixels wide, it'll display the same size, and it'll upload and download a whole lot faster.

Ayy, didn't know that. Thanks for the tip. I didn't weather the car, the guy I bought it from did. I also think the weathering on it looks good. The only weathering I did to it was make the trucks and couplers rusty brown with a paint marker when I upgraded them.
