It's no doubt a Life Like product.

Yep...Life-Like...you can get valve gear kits for them. Look under the shell, if it has a silver can-type motor, they run well and are quite reliable.

without taking the shell off, it appears that the motor is not a can motor. I can see the motor is not enclosed as I can see the copper winding. A gear must be stripped because there is a lot of slippage before it starts to move. Not as much in reverse as forward. I just noticed that turning the wheels manually, the gear on the front wheel axle does not move. That gear can be moved from side to side with no amount of force. Could this be the problem with slippage? If so, how can I fix it?

With the parts engine Shaygetz sent me I took the axle with the gear off it and replaced the one on my engine. When I put my transformer in reverse position, the engine runs forward, forward position, it runs in reverse. I put it on the track and it purrs like a kitten at fast of slow speeds. I put the parts engine back together and put it on the track but my transformer light dims like there is a short in the engine. I put a battery test on it and it runs very well. Thanks Shaygetz!
If I knew how to post a video here, I would.

Frank, did you by chance flip one of the drivers the wrong way on the parts engine? That could cause a short.

I never thought about that. Would I just flip one of the wheel sets around? On my good engine, I didn't worry about which way the wheel set was facing. When I test it with the battery, doesn't matter which two wheels I touch on opposite sides it still runs.
