Fellow Travelers on the Silver Streak:
Model Railroader has done something so supremely cool that I took an unheard of step: I subscribed again. First time in years. For $29.99, from a special offer Kalmbach puts up on their site. Easy to find if you look.
Here is where you look: https://secure.kalmbach.com/order/?c=IL27M&gclid=CjwKEAiA3vamBRDJ1Lfwt5Pckw4SJAAdhnk2fDFDVuSbMn46q-JWqvEYufzG3kM6y2XchQvB588WnxoC4nfw_wcB
Anyway, here is what they did. They've put every year of their magazine up, online, in an archive which any subscriber can access. The cost is $3.95 per month, on top the price of a subscription.
They say it's $4.95, but when you go to sign up, the $4.95 is for the "video plus" version and the $3.95 is the version that includes the archive only. Also, subscribers can add it on. I bought the digital sub, then went back the next day and signed up for the archive access.
Here is the registration link for existing subscribers: https://secure.kalmbach.com/customer/SignUp.aspx?siteID=14&pubCode=MRR&returnURL=http%3a%2f%2fmrr.trains.com%2farchiveaccess
It could be easier to navigate this process, it could, but the result is that for $78, I get to read EVERYTHING for a year. EVERYTHING. And I have been, and it is supremely cool. One of the first tremendous things I found was Eric La Nal's original coupler-building article, the one which gave rise to the Mantua loop coupler. And some rather ethnically insensitive 1940s Mantua ads as well.
I've been wanting them to do this for YEARS. And now they have, and it's great! This to me makes MODEL RAILROADER worth a sub. They could print 12 issues of nothing but Walthers kit pictures and I'd be happy...
