Very specific question that's been bugging me.
The 62' modern tanker kits came with hazmat placards for all four sides. The frame/walkway piece for the shorter tanks (42' chemical, triple dome shared the same one) appears to have mounting holes for them on the ends only though, and I've only seen one equipped with them but it was a custom job by someone else. So I'm wondering if they were actually included, and just rarely installed/frequently lost like brakewheels, or if for some reason they provided for their installation but did not include them.

Good question ... I have no idea. None of mine had them installed ... they were all 2nd hand too.

you could go onto the Net, find pictures of the haz-mat signs, shrink them down to HO size, print them out & glue them on

Already did that for a dozen or so different cargoes. The athearn hazmat placards are almost exactly 3 mm square. I usually print out little sheets of self-adhesive stickers and cut them to size. Pretty fun!

Radioactive? Very fitting... eventually you'll fill your house with enough trains that it'll go supercritical

Everyone and everything is at least a little radioactive. And as for the red "dangerous" placard, that could probably apply to all of us somehow or other.

PRR:
Yes, the Athearn 42' tank cars come with placard holders:

They're also a weird design which is apparently based on Santa Fe used for Bunker C fuel oil (for steam locomotives). The Tyco car and the Mantua Heavy (Lindberg) car are a little shorter, which looks more typical of a steam-era tank car to my eyes.
