I'm trying to assist a fellow hobbyist who has taken apart and reassembled a Tyco GP-20 with a powertorque. He says after he reassembled the motor it now runs in the opposite direction of another loco on the same track...I cannot imagine what he could have done to cause this condition to occur. He says he did not change or resolder any wires. I have never seen two Tyco locomotives run towards each other on the same track while powered by the same transformer...

A friend of mine had some Power Torque locomotives and they ran in the opposite direction from everything else. I suspect it's just the nature of the beast.

I'm more familiar with the MU-2 GPs, but I was thinking ... if he didn't unsolder anything, he may have spun both front & rear trucks 180 degrees ... not sure if that's possible with the PT.

I think the front and rear trucks on the GP20 have different designed frames to snap into, so I don't think you could put the power truck into the other position. The coupler pockets are made onto them, so they can only go one way. Well, actually, you COULD mount the dummy truck into the front frame, and vice versa, so it MAY be possible to reverse it. Usually the dummy truck trails I think, and the powered truck is up front with the headlight.

if the power truck is in the long hood portion of the locomotive, that may be the issue.

| I know I have several PTs that run in the opposite direction. Is he sure it hasn't always been like that? I'd say flip the magnets and see what happens. It's been a while since I took a PT apart but I'm pretty sure the gears and brush plates only fit one way. The trucks on the GP-20 also only fit one way.

Only 2 ways to reverse a PT. Flip the magnets in the field or flip the metal pick up wheels that feed the brushes. You can do either to get it to run in the right direction. frank

Maybe the GP20 is right and the other engine is backwards. May need to look outside the box [engine]! Regards, John

| right rail positive, forward. Move the insulation from the positive brush to the negative and resolder the wire to the insulated brush.

You can't accidentally reverse the wheels on a PT loco because the insulated wheels on the power truck are geared and can't be flipped. The wiring also can't be reversed, because one brush is permanently connected to the PT block by a grounding strap. Flipping the motor brush plate upside-down will reverse polarity to the armature. It's either that, or he's flipped both trucks 180 degrees.

Ah. I was thinking the ones with a armature parallel to the rails...not the pancake motor.
