While at a Barber shop on Saturday, I was reaching to get my coat to leave when I looked down into the toy box underneath the coat rack, and spied what looked like HO train parts. They IS, they IS HO! Turns out they are part of the Hawthorne collectible train set for President Obama. I only saw two cars, the B unit, and a passenger Observation car, both missing the chassis's. I'm thinking of trading unwanted diecast cars I've got for those pieces. I did some online research, and the starter collection listed at $69, I think for 3 pieces ( A-B units and first passenger car ). I'm hoping the rest of the parts are down in that bin. I can think of several train-wreck scenarios to use this train in. Anyway, what an unusual thing to find , both in a toy bin and a barber shop.

How ironic you found a train set related to Obama in train wreck form. Especially with the current state of this country.

I have seen a review on these sets. The tracks are very weak. The power supply has low emissions and is very weak. The cars keep going off the tracks. The set has 1 Tier IIII engine, 4 sleepers, 5 cabooses, and 7 empty coal cars. The price may be government subsidized for the underprivileged. The locomotive requires a 12 hour battery charge for every 17 minutes of operation. The engine would only run in reverse. Any body not buying one of these sets will be fined by the IRS for lack of having a government approved model train set. The set is priced at $100, but anyone with a job will be required to pay a model train use fee of $1000. At the time of purchase a $1 contribution may be made to expedite the shutdown of Gitmo. Sorry, Frank, I only see political satire here, I see no slander. Slander is basically a lie or misrepresentation of facts ( Oh, wait, Obama does that! ). Golf course upgrade, great satire. Overly expensive model train to use, satire. No where in any of these posts so far have I seen lies or smearing, it's all satire. Get a grip. I've even seen political train wreck cartoons in the paper, so you are WAY off base here accusing people of darker aspersions. Yes, I voted...unfortunately, the stupid and misled voters outnumbered the rest ( once again , oh wait, did I slander voters? No, Gruber did that... ). I read all the comments after mine, nowhere do I see anyone calling Obama names. NO ONE. The satire is great, though Sorry if you can't appreciate it, Frank. Here's another - Jimmy Carter will go to his grave smiling - why? Because now he's not considered the WORST president ever in modern history. While I don't like Obama, I think acquiring that Obama train for satirical purposes is perfect for me. I have lots of uses I can put it to. It's already in pieces in the toy bin, obviously the children don't have much respect for it, either. To each their own. I have no racist intents towards it, but I will be using it in a non-respectful manner. No apologies here! I can't remember how many times I heard entertainers in the news wish George W. Bush would die, or was called any number of names, and he was actually boo'ed at Obama's inauguration. Some liberals have no class. You don't see that from conservatives. I never have. At any rate, I feel no shame slamming the current political administration, it is deserving of all the derision it gets. Even the Democrats in Congress are standing away from him. Stay tuned, if I get my hands on what remains of that train, I WILL be posting more about it in the futre...

My goodness John Jerry were did those remarks come from? The questioning words "Since when did political slander become a part of this forum ?" . Then you say this directly to and about me. Your words "First you try to silence me for not being politically correct". My words have nothing to do at all with a try to silence you or anyone. Why have you imagined that? As I said in the second line my feelings, " I thought this was a place that wouldn't happen". I have no idea where you and others bitterness comes from that caused this response. If anything it seems to be a definite attempt to silence any question of that type. Do you fear this question? I don't care what anyone writes! I'm just sad that they wrote was it at all. Also you seem to be trying to silence a Republican, me. who believes in fair play, and justice. If you and the others are republicans then my thought of honesty, integrity and justice should be yours also. ARE THEY? Or is this question too pointed also. Will it bring another on another round of nasty remarks referencing me directly by name.
Opps I am sorry this post is directed to the writer of the post I quoted John. I appolige to jerry for the mistake.

Frank -
I think it is very easy to misunderstand one's intent when reading a post that contains political satire or sarcasm. I read the posts you found issue with and saw no more than some good-natured jabs at a political leader. You obviously read it differently, and brought up the words "political slander." And the rest, as they say - is history.
It's a shame we can't poke a little fun at our dear leaders from time to time without offending folks. A good sense of humor is a good thing to have in these times, you know.
And that's all from me on that.

Frank, I was too harsh in my selection of words, and to quick to use them. I know of you from this forum and I respect your views. for me the words slander and racism are harsh words and triggered a negative response. I think we should accept this as a misunderstanding and a done deal. We should move on and let it drop.
I will continue to post and you can continue to comment. I will endeavor to be more measured in my responses.

Well, I went by the Barber shop tonight after work, and talked to the manager there. He agreed to trade me the remains of the train for a big bag full of diecast vehicles I didn't want. Probably close to 100, as I'd weeded out the keepers and gave away the wild and unwanted types. I dug through the toy bin, and found the engine as well, chassis was there, too, but missing power truck and the side frame. Didn't find chassis's for either the B unit or the dome passenger car. That's OK, I can come up with chassis's for them, I have enough spare parts So, here's what I got.

I'm thinking of having a forward engine, followed by a big wrecking crane hooked up to the front of the Obama engine, towing the whole train around. It's a thought. Anyway, don't recognize the engine chassis, not sure who made it, will look it up and see if there is any reference to it online. If anyone recognizes it, let me know.

I think Mr. Bus is right, it appears to be Bachmann. It comes with EZ-Track and a Bachmann power pack:

Actually, they aren't so false. "Change can happen", yes it has and does, not always to our liking. But we CAN change change, after all.
"Yes we can! " Yes, they did...for awhile. True. But our response should be " Not for much longer! "
"America, this is our moment, our time ".... and, sometimes the time passes, and it's no longer your time. Some people just don't recognize that it is no longer their time. They need a rude awakening. It's coming.

I wonder how many of these sets were produced. I don't think I've seen anything like it before. That being a presidential campaign on a train set with a picture of the president (candidate). Or has it been done before? I wonder if 30 years from now if they will have a significant collector value? Think of all those vintage presidential pins, they are collectable now, even the non-winning candidate.

Jerry, That is a Bachmann 8 wheel drive chassis. I have some, but they are far away. Some of these have had cracked gear problems, Bachmann has replacement parts. Seems a waste to use such a good mechanism on an Obama engine. Maybe you could adapt a rubber band Athearn drive and only install one band.
I like your crane idea, maybe a big Bicentennial engine that would symbolize the strength of the American people. then the Obama engine would be just a Dummy. Regards John

Bicentennial engine would be good, I have plenty of those to work with. I also have plenty of F7 chassis's around here, too, I'm sure I can find something to use under this shell, power or dummy. Same with the B unit. I will probably have to scavenge a Bachmann 85 foot passenger for the base for the Obama dome. I'll leave the glass broken in it, though. I am shocked how this train withstood young children, being banged around in the toy bin, no telling how long it's been in there, maybe not long. None of the actual plastic other than the dome glass is broken, all 3 pieces I got are intact. Amazing. Who knows on the future value, I intend to get maximum play value out of it NOW I am not going to try to restore it, not why I bought it. I'm sure there will be other sets out there in pristine condition to satisfy the collectors, this one is getting used. Other ideas are to get a Republic(an) Steel engine, or maybe a Michelle "Bachmann" engine, to pull the decrepit hulk around. I might need a split dining car, one side for the masses with school lunch menu items, the other for the elites with steak and lobster. Throw some more ideas at me, as well. I welcome satirical suggestions. Will start looking for the chassis parts soon to at least get it rolling, or limping, along.

Jerry it's actually in its most authentic look right now - the wheels have fallen off and all that's left are empty shells.
Maybe add a decrepit Obamacare hospital car?

Jerry, The engine will need to go at the back of the train. Remember Leading from behind is now official policy. May I suggest this addition?
This car would allow the transportation of Terrorist on all trips. With this as part of the train he could release a few anytime he feels the urge. Jerry, (JNXT) Or maybe a Veterans hospital car with with 3 day coaches for all our brave men waiting on treatment. Regards, John

How about a re-purposed surplus box car that has a new lease on life.

Seeing some nice suggestions here! Since Mitt Romney's father was head of American Motors Corporation, I could work in some "gremlins" to follow Obama around. I also have an Osama Bin Ladin boxcar I got a few years ago, that could be utilized as well. I hadn't seen the McCain car before. That's a new one to me.
I like the idea of putting the engines at the rear, leading from behind indeed <ahem!> That is a nice touch, though. That Solyndra car is a hoot, as is the Jailbox car. Could do a completely glassed car, with solar panels. " Powered by your tax dollars".
As for the hospital car, it could feature Doctor Who, because with the ACA, you never know who your doctor will be, as you can't keep yours, as he/she is totally inadequate as judged by the politicians.
The train will also need a Pay Car, run by the IRS. Although in real life it was meant to pay OUT to employees, for the Obama Special, it will be a pay IN, you keep paying taxes, and someday you die and don't have to anymore. I have some old passenger cars, I bet I can find a black one to use for this.
Lovin' the artwork some of you did, too. I'm gonna have to save those.

Shouldn't that be...

Man, the FGE Solid Gold / Solid Cold / Real Cold / The Chiller cars were some of my favorite moderns, I'm sorry to see them fading away. So brash. Freight cars have gotten so subdued now, if they get real paint schemes at all instead of some stencil nonsense.

True. It's that way with trains in general, actually. They've become less "wow" when you see one. They're still cool but not quite as neat as the older locos and rolling stock.

I see a lot of these Hawthorne trains in "old people" magazines that my mom gets. They're always some gimmicky collectors edition thing. Seems like overpriced junk to me, since they want several hundred for some of their "collector" sets. Great score though, the way you got it.
As for politics...I ranted on here a few times in the past. It's not worth it. It's not the time or place. But I don't care if someone else wants to express their opinion. To each their own, as they say.
