Had a trip through eastern Colorado to eastern Kansas which we take fairly regularly. Along highway 287 and onto 96 you pretty much follow a rail bed; somewhat active yet.

This little station at Selkirk, which you could easily miss because it is dwarfed by some pretty big elevators on either side was the site of an 1896 train wreck . . .

We're heading east now (going 94 and then we'll get on to 287) . . .
Take a pretty good size layout to model this . . .

and there's a pretty good bunch of graffitied gondolas lined up in a couple of spots . . .

then Kit Carson has a nice little depot that's been turned into a museum. I will confess that I usually have ants in my pants to get back to Colorado and I've never taken the time to stop and tour the museum.

So there's a nickel tour.

I don't know how deep you get into Kansas, but if your travels take you near Abilene, there's a really neat railroad museum there: http://asvrr.org/
I was there a few years back and shot some video: http://youtu.be/iKAs11_Fd38 and put together a slide show of stills: http://youtu.be/nBXtcEevYpE as well as an illustration of classic poetry: http://youtu.be/QKp5q6zJlbs

quote: That is actually a pretty neat railroad museum. That other depot would probably make a good one, too.

"A lot of modellers out there who go to these train shows see broken HO stuff and go, 'This is useless' when, in reality, they can still be used for modeling whether it's as a prop on your layout or a cool project to make something old new again."

Looking at that photo of the wreck, you can see "Iron Mountain" on the side of the RPO. I presume that must be former StLIM&S line there, pretty cool! If anyone ever finds the Ambroid StLIM&S stock car, let me know, I want one...

I'm looking at that video Don and the track that is leading on to the bridge looks like it's got some interesting twists to it. Is that just optical distortion from something or other, or is the track actually that torqued around?

The track has its dips and twists, but it looks worse than it is because I was shooting telephoto. All the dips are really there, but they're not as abrupt as they look and they're spread out over much more track than they appear to be.
