Found this in my junk box this week. I got it running fairly well but it gets hot and stops. I let it cool off for a couple of minutes and it runs great again. How can I fix that?

That's a sign of a weak magnet. Those magnets are fairly easy to replace in this locomotive. Use the "rare earth" neoprene magnets and you will below than pleased with their performance at all speeds, especially slow speeds.

The reasons I know for overheating are: 1) Stiff mechanism causing the motor to work too hard - clean gears, bearings, etc. and regrease/oil with fresh lubricant. Check for carpet fuzz, or burrs causing, poorly aligned gears and bearings.
2) Weak motor magnet - touch something steel to the motor magnet and see if the field seems strong or wimpy. About the only fix for this is to replace the old magnet with neodymium magnets.

Looking at the underside of this engine, the bottom plate is riveted on. How would I grease the gears?

Can you get at the gears from the top of the truck? I don't recognize the make of this particular engine to know how it's assembled. The thing is, I have looked at old engines, before, in which the grease had gotten old and hard like wax.

It's in pretty rough shape, so you should also check the magnet for any steel screws, spikes , etc. that might be stuck across the magnet poles. You can blast it out with contact cleaner, which is pretty good at removing even hardened grease without drilling it out. Check the slots in the commutator for any packed in dirt, which can cause shorts and overheating. Remove the brushes and clean them, and clean the slots with the tip of an X-Acto blade if necessary.
Wait for it to dry out, then oil the bearings lightly through the holes in the underside and press a little light grease onto the axle gears from the side of those punched out gear covers, clean off any excess and let it run in.

The engine is a mantua/tyco. See the picture below. When I get back from work, I will try and pull the motor out of the shell. I greased it from the underside last night so today I will put it on the track and see if that helped. Thanks

| Ok, I pulled the motor out and the magnet seems strong. Then I greased it and it is running pretty good. I ran it for about 20 minutes and the motor still gets warm but does not stop running. If you look at the rear of the engine, it is missing the coupler clip. Can someone tell me what kind of a clip holds the coupler on? Where can I find one?

Hey Tramp, if you can't find a clip for it, tap it for a 2-56 screw and put a Kadee on it. Evan
