I've heard an Atlas worm gear does nicely in a Mehano truck. Heard it lowers the gearing quite abit. How much work does it take to swap one in and what era of the Atlas diesels works?

The worms for their Kato Alcos are the best fit. They will halve the current speed. It's discussed here, and if you click the auction link they have finally been relisted:

I press them off of their stock shafts and transfer them, but they may be long enough for a drop-in replacement. The trucks just snap a part with a screwdriver.

OK. I found this Nelson:

I always wanted to modify an Mehano C630. Better gearing, add some pick ups, and flywheel drive system. Just a redo of the engine detailing included.

They will do the trick. As I've pointed out before, tho, it will never be a great puller due to the 2 idler axles. You could put a TT tire equipped wheel on each truck to help it along, which you can pull from almost any Mehano diesel.

Yup, replacing the Mehano worm with an Atlas worm will cut the speed in half. The reason for this is the Mehano worm is a double-thread type, while the Atlas is a single thread. So, instead of moving 2 teeth per revolution, it will only move 1 tooth. If your diesel runs at a scale 120 MPH, it will become 60.
