I just dug out of storage a small Bachmann Spectrum 70 ton GE switcher, equipped with DCC already. However, the problem is that the engine seems to have gear slippage. It has two worm gears on dual shafts, which seem to engage another gear before driving 5 small little gears inside the truck frame. Those gears look fine, I don't see any damage, but there is obvious slippage going on, the engine will move, then stop, then pick up again. I " think " there is a gear in between the worm and small truck gear, but can't tell without taking it all apart. Is anyone else running one of these, and have any insight into any known problems with them? I think I bought it as a problem child, and have just recently rediscovered it in my storage boxes. So I want to try to get it fixed. I may just have to take it all apart to see what's going on with it. I've read on The Internet that some had heat problems, and broken gears, but it doesn't sound like that, just that it starts and stops, not much noise change other than RPMs.

Based on my 44 tonner, I think it's possible that the gears are slipping on the axles. It looks like, if you ran it upside down, you could see the gears moving. You could then put a bit of drag on a wheel with your finger and see if the gears stopped or if just the wheel stopped.

Hmm, hadn't looked at the axle gears yet, so will check those out as well. Could be split, I"m sure. Once I get back from my trip, I'll look into that.
