Well my new project now isn't another camelback. That can waite. These old time locomotives need a period layout to be home on. I am starting on the largest of the three shops that were in a group to the south-west in line with the roundhouse. It is the locomotive erecting shop. The year is 1890. Well this is the start of the project. Letting all interested know of what is coming.

Barry. You are way to new. !890 is the time for 4-4-0 2-6-0, 0-8-0 and 2-8-0 locomotives. Not that monster articulated beast. Also the time when CRR of NJ was making its own camelbacks in those wheel arrangements.

Thanks for straightening me out on that Frank. Though I still think it's neat to see the tools and the types of equipment they were working with. I'll have to keep my eye out for some earlier photos, so I can straighten myself out further.

* Another drawing. This is just a not scale view of the South-east wall. It faces toward the Ashley station. The rectangular part is to high. With the distance across the bottom being 90 feet the height of the rectangle should be about 24 feet.
* The personnel door seen in the right side towards the center of the wall pictured below is just a thought I had of placing a door on this wall when the only photo I had showed some kind of door there. That was from a 1950's photo. It seemed that that part of the wall was reworked and a door was added. Now the postcard of the erecting shop I first seen around a month ago shows a engine door there. This engine door though the same in appearance, is built into the south-east wall in a different way then the 6 on the south-west wall.

Here is the opposite view to the last. It is the north-west wall. closest to the blacksmith shop . The center door is one I dreamed up. There is no photo or drawing showing this wall. There is a photo which includes the far right edge of the wall showing a window in a brick panel. Of the 2 sides to this wall each with its own gable section above it, each side has 3 panels. of the 6 total panels one must have a personnel door, or some other kind of door, in it at least. In my drawing I show a grand entrance filling the 2 center panels. As I said I just made this entrance up and may make it this way.

* This is what the south-west wall looks like with its engine doors and windows and a personnel door to the far right. Their is a photo showing this detail. So this one wall of the 4 on this building will be close to correct. The other 3, well who knows? Nobody is giving me the information.
frank

edit 1-30-15. this wall drawing is incorrect in door style and the personnel door to the far right doesn't exist. Windows are there only. Information sent to me provided the new view. This came from a post card from the Luzern County Historical Society on line.

Very interesting! Move the in/out track to the left side and you've got the same basic arrangement as the A&GW backshop in Meadville, PA, later used by the Erie. These were from the same general era.

http://www.fcvrrhs.org/meadville_rr_history.htm

Have you checked HABS/HAER for info? They have some very detailed information on the Meadville buildings.

http://www.loc.gov/pictures/related/?&pk=pa0372.sheet.00004a&st=gallery&sb=call_number#focus

Interesting things to take away from the photos - the rather sad remnant of the shop complex was still seeing a lot of use in 1971, turning and servicing wheels and axles for the large and much newer carshop at the Meadville yards. The roundhouse is made of wood and sheathed in clapboards. I can't say I've ever seen a wooden roundhouse on a model railroad.

* Rolling along I have been working a few days on the two, 90' walls. South/east and north west. The S/E will be the most detailed unless I am gifted with patience from above. The top ones are S/E and the bottom pair are to be N/W.
* All will be cut out like those already done . All of what I am doing will be seen clearly in the future . To much for me to explain.

*** Here is what I meant 2 post ago when I described what I would do.

** First make the back panel.

** Next cover one side with bricks, and glue on the overlay of Pilasters, to create the recessed panels. S/E wall, left side.

Frank, I'm going to enjoy watching you build this. Starting out like this, you make it look easy to do a big project like that. Thanks for going through it with photos and such. I'm wanting to build some sort of single stall engine shed and I'll bet there will be some good tips for me on this thread.

** There are 6 recessed panels, three to each half. The one shown will have a engine door, like seen here. The other 5 will have windows. One in each recess. they are 4X4, doublehung, for a total of 32 lights.
* The windows on the long sides are 3' wide and are 3X4, doublehung, for a total of 24 lights each. There will be 2 evenly spaced windows in each 10' wide recess. There will be 48 lights in each recess.

Yes. From looking at that brick "paper" (at least photo of it), I would not have known it was paper. Nicely applied Frank, with the pattern followed tightly against the relief.

It's good looking paper. Where did you get it, Frank? Is it old Walthers paper?

I like brick paper too, and I'm glad to see it come back. I remember being rather frustrated as a teenager because nobody but Faller seemed to make it, and the Faller stuff was embossed card, very expensive and hard-to-get.

Go find a brick wall the right color and take a picture of it. You need to find a wall without any windows. Take the photo on a clear bright day from a distance where the part of the wall that has no windows is in the center of the photo viewer. The center of a lenses has the least distortion. Take a few pictures. with the wall larger and smaller in the viewfinder. Use a tripod. experiment a little . Find out what your camera can do.

*** in the micro-Mark Winter 2015 catalog, the latest one on page 73 they show there embossed brick paper.
