I was wondering how I could make or what to do to make a reverse light for an HO scale Mantua engine? Using grain of wheat bulbs for the project. I want it to turn on when I throw the engine in reverse and have the front light turn off.

What you will need is fairly simple. Insert a diode between each bulb and power, one wired Cathode end, the other bulb Anode end, to power. That way, each bulb will work one way only. Here's a link to a circuit which does that. You'll need 1N4001 diodes or equivalent.

You'll have a 50-50 chance of getting the direction of the front and rear lights, OR you know that the right side of the loco is + power, and the left is - going forward. Wire accordingly.
