Guys - I am working on a long-term project to recreate the Amtrak Sunset Limited from 1993. In addition to Superliner cars, it had a couple of ex-ATSF Hi Level cars - a lounge and a dorm car. What do you think about the Fleischman models of these cars? I've found many photos of them online but it's hard to get a true feel for it without eyeballing them. Are they fairly close to scale size or have they been shortened? Anyone has any of these cars please chime in...thanks.

From the other Jerry -
Well, look at the pictures, is that silver one what you are talking about? It's a Fleischmann, I only have the one, the two UP are also Fleischmann, although all metal. All 3 were to be sold on Ebay eventually, as they don't fit my collection or operating niches. It seems a bit short, but I can't really tell. The green BN is an AHM 85 foot for comparison. what length were the cars you were talking about? 85 footers aa well?

Hi Jerry in VA - thanks for the reply with comparison photos that is a huge help
That is indeed the Fleischman I was referring to, and yes it does appear that they shortened it. The shortening itself doesn't bug me, the real question I'll have to answer would be if they will look out of place next to what will likely be Con-Cor Superliners - which I do believe are 85'.
The Fleischman cars were attractive because it seems they can be had for reasonable $$. Otherwise H-Level cars are pretty pricey.

So....what are you gonna offer me for it? I have no idea what they sell for. Let me know if you're interested in buying it. I'm sure I can move it on Ebay. But I'd rather offer it to a Tyco Forum member first.

I sold one of these a few years ago. I'm not sure how much this picture will contribute, but it's the only one I have. As shown above they are not 85'.

I don't know how they would look with 85-foot coaches, but I combine mine with shorty Athearn coaches and they look just fine to me. I kitbashed a bagg-dorm transition car to match them.

Nice transition car, Redwoods. We all have to admit though, most of Fleishman's American stuff was quite bizarre.

Thomas those Hi-Levels look real good in that consist. Did you put horn-hooks or knuckle couplers on them?

I replaced the hook-and-loop couplers with Kadees. They are boxed up at the moment but I will see if I can take a pic and post it.

Here is how I mounted my Kadees. I used the original truck mount with standard Kadee box. The truck mount on Fleischmann cars is very high because the original couplers are fairly tall, so I mounted the Kadee draft box underneath with a 2-56 screw and nut. The coupler itself is one with a long overset shank since the mount is still too high. I could have used a shim, but the overset shank does the job just as well.

Thanks, I had fun building the transition car. Here is a pic before I painted it silver. It kinda slaps you in the face, doesn't it.

That transition car is great. An Athearn baggage and a coach (?). Can you elaborate on how you fabricated the roof extension? I'd like to try that some time.
Very cool

The two cars I used were an Athearn baggage and an Athearn observation. For the roof extension, I basically cut a piece of roof from a donor car and stacked it on top of the existing roof. The I cut another piece of roof for the angled part and filed it until it fit. For kitbashes like this I use a "minimum cuts" approach. Since the resulting car is only a crude representation of the prototype, I don't try to make the window locations accurate. Just enough cuts to make it passable at 10 feet.

Thanks Redwoods. I'm going for it, as soon as I have another donor car. Have you thought of recreating the roof antenna?

Excellent, I can't wait to see yours when you're done. I want to add a roof antenna, but I'm not sure what to use for stanchions. I've thought of using athearn stanchions but they seem bit large. Do you have any ideas?

Actually I WAS thinking of Athearn stanchions! In part because I had restored an old Rivarossi car that had the mounting holes for the roof antenna already molded in (antenna.stanchions missing). I had a ton of the short stanchions available, so I trimmed the angled ends off - shortening the stanchions to a length that looked right to me, CA'd them into the mounting holes and then threaded a piece of straight wire through them. I think it came out fairly decent, here is a photo of it:

Wow, that does look great! Very nice. OK, well Athearn stanchions it is then. I don't have any on hand, but I'll buy some short ones and give it a try. Thank you for posting your picture.

Any advice on installing Kadee couplers?
Will the plastic truck sideframes pop out of the metal that holds it? I want to remove the hook/loop couplers but the rivet holding them in is directly under the sideframe brace. Would prefer not to remove the entire truck unless there is no other way.
I tried to pry the sideframes off but was afraid to use too much force and break something.
