It seems like 'tis the season for everyone to make up their own OTW, and I found something neat to share, so I thought I'd follow the trend and give you WTF Thing of the Week. Posts can be anything train-related that really makes you stop and wonder what in the wide world you're looking at, or something. Y'all get the gist.
Here's mine: there was once a freight car where the load was carried inside the wheelsets.
You read that correctly.

...and according to all reports, the concept worked well! Was deemed "too radical" though

That would've been very interesting if that actually went through.

If we do enough of these we can start an OTWOTW thread. Not that I mind seeing good content.
It's funny how the only reason the car in the link above wasn't used is because the design was too radical. That says something about our society I suppose. Cool concept regardless!

It may say less than meets the eye. The world was already set up well to use cars that pull up alongside a loading dock and load or unload. How did they load and unload these big rolling barrels full of freight? Change to a whole new paradigm and you have to change all of your loading and unloading facilities. Then, they don't match the cars you already have, and those all need to change at once. At that point, you need to ask if the improvement is worth the cost. The answer, apparently, was no.

That's probably a very valid point. The article presented a full paragraph listing the benefits of the car but provided only a single sentence as for why the car was never used (too radical). Perhaps there is some information missing...

100% unsprung weight probably isn't the best recipe for a good-riding rail vehicle, either. :D
...on the other hand, if these had come into use, every one of our modern diesel trains would have Realistic chug-chug sounds...

Already getting a scale drawing worked out for this thing based on that lithograph available dimensions I found. I'm going to build one as soon as I can figure out how in God's name I can put flanges on a section of 6.5-scale-foot-diameter dowel. Aside from that and the link+pin couplers, it should actually be a painfully simple build to be honest.

Maybe cut the dowel where the flange needs to be, glue a washer on either end (slightly larger in diameter than the dowel) to form the flange, and then glue the dowel back together? Just a thought...

I was looking on H0Seeker's Athearn page and found this.
What the heck was Athearn thinking when they made this? That's kinda why I decided to post it here. I mean, come on, there's an obvious Mantua Pacific in the train set picture when there should be the Athearn Hi-F drive Pacific they made back then. And that's not all, right underneath it, for the Pacific they have a Fleischmann Pacific as the picture. My gosh, had Athearn lost their mind by 1958?

Why can you hardly blame them for that? It's almost like they're trying to hide something about the model that they don't want the general model railroading public to see, especially since those Athearn Pacifics turned out to be some of the worst products Athearn ever made.Or it could just be that they just started making them that year so there's that too.
