Just serviced a Tyco Royal Blue - replaced dry rotted traction tires - Discovered that the Calumet #505 tires work perfectly on these 2-8-0 as it is power torque driven and the wheels are the same as diesels - also replaced the cracked plastic wheel with a metal side set with NO PROBLEMS - actually runs better in my opinion by doing this - Also noticed a difference in the under carriage = Beginning with the 1977 - the tender frame is all die cast where as later production Royal Blue locomotives were die cast with plastic bottoms - see pictures below - NOTE - WHEN YOU REPLACE WITH METAL WHEEL GEAR - THE PLASTIC VERSION HAS GROOVE FOR TIRE WHERE THE METAL WHEEL DOESN'T NOW - DOES NOT AFFECT OPERATION - IF YOUR REPLACING TIRES ON THE ORIGINAL WITH PLASTIC TIRE - YOU WILL NEED 4 TIRES TOTAL
with replaced wheels and NEW traction tires installed = 1977 version

comparison photo - top is 1977 version and bottom is an mid to late 80's production
