I bought this at a train show, an Athearn SW7. I was wondering if it was a factory paint job or somebody's homemade design. The JJJ letters are not a decal. They might be pad printed or dry transfer.

Unspoken expectations are premeditated failures.

Looks like a nicely done custom job to me.

Definitely custom painted. I have a custom painted Athearn Blue Box Geep unit that was done so well that it took me quite some time to find out it truly was a custom.

I have seen some really good custom jobs. also. That I wouldn't know the difference had I not been told. There is also a company called Bev-Bel that does custom or low production run paint schemes.

I thought the color scheme on my SW might be from a prototype railroad. And the letters/numbers are not decals kind of makes me wonder who might have done this.

If not custom-painted, possibly a special factory run for a customer? If not Athearn then possibly Bev-Bel? I know there are some sets out there done special for companies, for example as a Christmas gift for employees.
