Picked this up from Craig's List for $10. It was listed as "new". When I got it, it certainly wasn't "new". The tender was missing the whole bottom chassis, the cow catcher was missing and the pilot deck was broken, the boiler cover/light/bell missing and was pretty much a basket case.
Picked up some unknown boiler cover/light from fleabay. Unfortunately it was a little too small, but since I save lots of odds and ends, I tried the bottom of a prescription bottle and it matched the diameter of the boiler. I also picked up a brass cow catcher.

I've also picked up another tender from fleabay, but it didn't have the right chassis, so I had to add metal wheels, pickups and get it connected to the loco. I used Kadee centering springs as pickups. Saw someone else use that trick and it works great! Had to remove the coating from the wheels so they'd conduct.
Need to get pictures of the tender.
Thanks,
Tim

Thanks! Need to pick up something to use as new decking for the pilot to cover up all the splicing that was done. Any recommendations?

Here are some shots of the tender. The wipers are connected to each other and the front wiper is connected to a wire soldered to the drawbar.

Using the bottom of the pill bottle was a cool idea. Looks good too. Nice job on the restoration.

I would just fill in and sand the pilot deck with Milliput. Bonds well and wet sands easily.
Clever re-purpose of household items. If you paint the smokebox front black or the front end of the boiler silver (U.P. Style) I think the add-on part will blend even better.
Unspoken expectations are premeditated failures.

Thanks guys. I'll probably paint the smoke box front black to blend in. Need to figure out if that light lens will pop right out or not. Otherwise, I'll have to cover it in rubber cement/mask.
For the pilot, I just ended up sanding the filler down. Took a few coats as it's thinned.

Had to replace the crappy handrails. Used some brass wire. Took a few tries soldering the stanchions and a few didn't take, so used CA instead.

One side done. Hopefully get the other done tomorrow.

Those handrails are a vast improvement over the old ones.

Brass always adds a touch of class to a locomotive. Good job there.

Got the other side done and added some more detail to the pilot and got one coat of paint on it.

Thanks,

Now calling this a Heavy Pacific. Got the non-existent linkage replaced. Picked up a complete set of drivers and linkage from a Washington 4-6-2. So now this thing looks like a real Heavy Pacific. Need to pick up a 12 wheel tender to call it complete.
I had to put a break in the handrail to be able to disassemble everything, but got it lined up better than this picture shows...

Thanks, Tim
