Micro-B, you just went to the Super Bowl and Disneyworld in one shot. WOW. Insane find there!

And if it was me I would not touch a thing on it. Make a shrine for it and encase it in glass

Incredible find there, Microbusss. Especially since it's in mint condition.Anyway, my SOTW is a cheap G-scale train set we got at a grocery store earlier today.

Why did they put the caboose in the middle?

Good luck finding one for cheap. I did see the whole set without the motor for $30 at the last train show.

Ben, I am stunned. That thing is showroom new! I've never seen one in the box, and $80 was a steal. I'd consider leaving it original.

There's a reason we're seeing stuff like this and my RR Atlantic: older model railroaders are dying off, and long held collections are being liquidated. My LHS owner deals with it constantly now, and since it was local is pretty sure which collection the Atlantic came from.

First off, of course - Congrats on the wicked awesome find, Ben!

Second - a sad but true phenomenon. As a young model railroader, on one hand it's sad to think how all the older heads in the hobby, with all their interesting stories and advice, are dying off. But on the other hand, you're right, all sorts of long-hoarded gems are becoming more available than they have for decades, and for those handful of young collectors who appreciate vintage trains, it's a total blessing.

For example, one retired gentleman who comes to all the local swap meets is there to sell off, bit by bit, his lifetime's HO steam collection. As far as I know, he has more than one of every Penn Line steamer made still to go, including 3 Crusaders - one UNOPENED IN BOX. Every time I see him I make sure to get something if I'm not broke, since his entire table is filled with flawless, vintage, reasonably-priced steam locos - he built them all himself and kept every one in perfect running order for decades. It's kind of bittersweet to watch what was probably a magnificent collection get scattered in the wind.

Another one. A family friend of ours, George, had been collecting trains over the last several decades. Living alone in retirement, he had filled his whole house with everything from Z to G. Never saw anything else like that house. It was truly a sight to behold, and every piece had a story that he'd tell you. Every single paint scheme ever put on a Lionel GG1 was lined up on one shelf, all in order. There was a brass G-Scale PRR T1 in one corner, and he'd always tell me how he paid $2,000 for it and never knew quite why. He passed away a couple years ago, leaving no immediate family. I was given one O-scale Hudson, the last loco he purchased, and his estranged son-in-law appears to have sold off the entire remainder without telling anyone who knew George or his trains so that the house could be demolished. Truly a sad turn of events.

And now I'll be quiet because probably noone actually bothered to read all that. Never mind.

That is truly saddening, PRR.This is why we need to preserve these magnificent beasts (model trains in general) so that future generations will have the chance to see what model railroad was once like back in it's golden age.

PRR 4800 - believe it or not, read every word

Fascinating perspective, and yes I have seen similar examples of that myself. Just recently picked up a Rivarossi Pullman that someone had obviously poured heart and soul into. Laying there on the table for $7.
I tell my wife "some old guy spent hours on it and now he's probably passed on and this little piece of his railroad empire somehow ended up in my hands, probaly sold for nothing at an estate sale."

You know, may sound funny but I feel honored to be a caretaker for the thing now. Someday I hope at least some of the pieces I have sunk my heart into will end up on someone's layout and be valued as well.

ty NKP What the pics don't show is a couple of scratches on the loco

Like the bumper thing right above the front left wheels on loco?
that has paint missing abit
theres a fine thin scratch on that side too
Also on the far top right inside box above the fins of last car
There's some blue sky missing Like there was a price sticker there

Also I looked on Ebay & I never saw this box!
So maybe I did get a rare box
Otherwise I see this set in individual boxes

Ditto. That is one reason why I bought the Hobbytown/Sampson set I saw on dBay. It reminded me of a time when an older guy showed me his trains and got me hooked on them.

I read it all too, and identify with all your sentiments.

At the summer Greenberg show there was a regular seller dumping really nice stuff at ridiculous prices as the show opened. I picked up a Varney Dockside that someone had detailed and added the valve gear kit to for $7! When I asked she said it all came from an estate sale. After I got it home I discovered the original owner also added a headlight and backup light, with fabric snaps as quick wire disconnects between the chassis & the shell. I also picked up a beautifully custom painted PRR Athearn S12 for $7.

PRR 4800, all of this parting out is sad, but better than the alternative. None of us will take it with us when we go, and my LHS owner has told me horror stories of entire brass collections that ended up in a landfill because the relatives didn't care, and didn't need the money.

I am excited about the potential value of my Atlantic, but honestly I would have spent that $200 for it whether it was worth that to someone else or not. I've wanted one for so long, and it's a piece of history in perfect condition that I won't be letting go of for a long time. I'm just glad I can give it a good home.

Ben, better take care of that Varney!

I will humbly sneak in my post I moved here to make use of my space for a reply comment on the -Busses Aero train. And join in a more proper location with the congratulations.

* Here this week I'm posting a TYCO passenger set that was not sold as a set. If it was, I can't find anything on it. The cars, combine only, photo is shown in both the 1968 and 1969 catalogs in HOSEEKER. I guess this was the first type of Santa Fe 1890 passenger cars made. As you can see the lettering says only Santa Fe. In 1969 the new Golden West, Atchison, Topeka, and the Santa Fe set came out. It used the new cars that were lettered for the Atchison, Topeka, and the Santa Fe, all painted differently. These cars I am posting are lettered Santa Fe, and seem to be not used in any set . In 1967 the all gray 4-6-0 ATSF was listed in the catalog. I have this so it is used to pull my unlisted Santa Fe train set, giving it a different locomotive. Only I didn't like mine as a 4-6-0 and swapped drives with a 4-8-0 I had to give the engine a little more traction. I'll get a photo out with this odd ball set, completely factory painted, all together soon. Maybe a second post in this week's SOTW. Or next week's.
* also this other type ATSF combine is shown in the photo for a reference.

Beautiful Aerotrain. I'm jealous of you Ben...

I'll throw my own little box of history in. I suppose this could also fit under AotW, but it is a set!

This is a pre-1963 Eheim Trolleybus set.

Neat! I once knew a guy in Cambridge Springs, PA named George Menser who had a very neat layout, maybe 7 x 12, mostly 1960s and maybe early 70s European and American HO. All DC, all 2-rail, mostly American in setting with one European town that used these Eheim buses for transit. The buses almost, but not quite, failed to run.

A few years after he passed away, his widow donated all of his equipment to the local historical society (I think) and I helped in building a complete replica of his layout with modern materials and the original buildings and rolling stock. Including the old unreliable bus system which was quite a job to untangle and put back together. They ran about as well as ever...;)

The library down there used to display it every Christmas; I should call and see if it's back this year.

That sounds like a layout I would have loved to have seen! I've only ever set my system up once (and only in a straight line), but from what I remember it worked fairly well. Having it on a layout would probably be a whole other story.

If the library still has it set up, any chance we could see some pictures?

If they do, sure. If not, I'll at least try to find out what became of it. It might have gone to the town museum.

I know just the feeling... a couple years ago at the spring thaw show in Allentown, PA, some vendor had about 20 flats of mostly junked freight cars, but I (of course) had to look through. And near the bottom of it all there was an absolutely beautiful pair of Ambroid cars - a Mathieson Dry Ice reefer and a CB&Q 50' double-plug-grain-door boxcar. Whoever built them was definitely a master of the craft, and these cars must have been quite the labor of love. I asked for a price. The guy shouted over to his wife at the next table, "Hey! What're these old wooden things?" "I dunno, he can have 'em for two bucks apiece" came the reply. Obviously no love for them there. I promptly took them home.
There really is a certain feeling of being a caretaker for some of these old trains, especially when you can really tell they meant a lot to whoever once built them, and so they mean a lot to us too when we find them.

I'll throw my own little box of history in. I suppose this could also fit under AotW, but it is a set!

This is a pre-1963 Eheim Trolleybus set.

I like this, Eric

Thanks, Walt! I like it too, I just wish I could display it properly. The buses were made out of a plastic that warps in certain types of light...
