Fellow Tykes: Just unearthed an interesting monster in a plain brown cardboard box with red Tyco lettering: number 7878M "J.C. Penney 926-1173 Super Spirit of 76 W/11 Cars." Crammed into every available inch of this whopping 9"x10 1/2"x21" box is what appears to be Tyco's largest Spirit of 76 Trainset offering. While I don't have the corresponding Penney's Christmas catalog for the year, the box routing shows this set as catalog number 926-1173, shipped from Penney's regional warehouse in Atlanta to a Penney's at the Florence Mall in Florence, SC. Unfortunately the shipping date was removed from the routing slip. This set is huge: contents: 1- lighted Super Spirit Diesel 1- Piggyback flat w. two trailers 1- flatcar with logs 1- box car 1- crane with boom tender (2-car set) 1- cable reel car 1- 62' tank car 1- container flat car 1- billboard reefer 1- pulpwood car 1- caboose 24-signs and poles 2- power packs Track, including remote control left and right hand switches Operating crossing Gate Remote Control Operating Log Dump Piggyback Terminal with Truck Cab Lighted Freight Station and (weirdest of all), Union 76 Lighted Service Station
All this made for a BIG 45"x63" double oval with five stations and rerailer. Tyco specifies the first pack to run train set, the second pack for all accessories.
This is, I suspect, the largest of the Spirit of 76 offerings.

Re: 7878 set: Short of unearthing the Penney's catalog, from which one could garner the set price and year, I don't think there's a lot more to say. I was struck by the combination of Tyco photo-cover boxes and painting-cover boxes in the same set but I've seen that before (my red-box transitional Rairoad Empire set from '71-2 is about equal parts old and new boxes and I KNOW that was as-purchased (it was mine as a youth). I'd be interested to know how your individual items were packed in the master box, ie. what kind and color of packaging. It is worth noting that Tyco's Super Spirit was retained late in the Bi-Centennial train game. It remains to be determined (again, the catalog would answer the question) whether this is a set for the Christmas market of '76-7 or '77-8. In the end, all I know is it's a whopper. MagnoliaAcademy
